Our interest was beaked â er, piqued â this week when Country Living highlighted a rather unique Etsy find: a crocheted Christmas sweater for chickens.
The piece, ranging in size from extra-small (4.5 in. from the neck to the bottom) to large (9 in.) and retailing for $14.99 to $18.45, is red with white trim and wooden Santa-emblazoned buttons. Custom colors are available, too.
âDo you have laying hens outside in the cold?â reads the description by seller Animal Fun and Fashion. âDonât ruffle any feathers! Get those girls in a sweater to keep them happy and warm.â
âA perfect Christmas gift!â he or she adds.
Positive comments tout the adorableness of the product and the âperfect fit,â however, some on Country Living pointed out that it can actually be dangerous to keep chickens in clothing because of their feathers.
In response, the seller wrote, âI have been advised that these sweaters may not be safe for chickens to wear constantly. They can interfere with molting, or their feet can become tangled in the yarn if the fit is not correct. Buyer holds all responsibility for the safety of their chickens.â
While the items are currently sold out for the season, hereâs hoping itâll be restocked in the months ahead.

@Greeneyedlady21 Too funny! I've seen this before on Etsy. Several years ago I came across a shop that had sweaters for chickens....gave me a good laugh! But if they have sweaters for dogs, why not chickens?....they must get cold too?

Our chickens had heat lamps and when they perched, they were dry and their feathers kept them warm. Ever felt a down pillow?

@Nonametoday I've never really been around chickens so I had no idea their festhers were similar to geese. I learn something new all the time here! ![]()
ETA: I had to look up which birds were used for down and was shocked to read that most down is collected by removing the fine down feathers from live birds (done mostly in China). Sounds terrible and will look for alternatives in the future.

It's a total waste of money and concern to buy a sweater for a chicken instead of a child somewhere in the world who needs one.

Has anyone informed @Chickenbutt she can now wear clothes?
