I was put to work early so I did many of the chores around the house.  I guess that's why I have a strong work ethic.  But my least favorite was the laundry.  We had a ringer washer in the basement with twin tubs.  After washing I put the wet clothes in a big container and hauled them up steep stairs and then a long way out to the back yard and hung them on the lines to dry.  After they were dry bring them in and fold, the shirts had to be ironed.  No steam iron, I sprinkled them with water, rolled them up and put in a plastic bag for a while, then ironed with a small GE iron.

I started ironing for my mother's friends at age 10.  I was paid $2 for a bushel basket size of shirts.  I had enough to buy a Photoplay Magazine and a 45 record.

I hated all of them.  Both of my parents worked long hours.  They owned a business that was open from 7 am to 2 am.  Only on Sunday were they both home at the same time.

I was responsible for cooking, doing the dishes, cleaning the kitchen which included scrubbing the floor and waxing them, cleaning the bathroom and scrubbing and waxing the floors in there too.

I vacuumed and dusted, babysat my siblings and pretty much ran the household from about the age of 10 or 11.

Our house had three kitchens.  Everytime someone got a drink they threw the glass in the sink.  I would have to wash glasses in all three kitchens every day.  The worse chore is doing dishes....no contest.

I did yard work too....cutting our very large lawn that was not flat and cutting a 40ft hedge a few times each summer.

I washed windows, the woodwork and walls.

The only chore I didn't do was laundry and shopping. If I could get my siblings to help, it was a good day.  Usually, I did most of it myself.

I wasn't really made to do any chores and just did them.  I was always more particular than any of my siblings.  I just always cleaned and helped.

When I got older and my dad lost his eye sight and my mom worked full time I was expected to help get supper going.  My dad liked to cook and I would help.

My least favorite chore is to dust.  I like the results but seems like the place sure gets dusty fast.

Re: Childhood Chores

We really didn't do much of anything,my mother was a super clean nut and nothing was ever clean enough.  I would occasionally wash the kitchen floor to surprise her, of course she would redo it. I loved her and miss her every day.

@Bonkers1

I think we had a steam iron.  I vaguely remember my mother dampening clothes....perhaps early on, I would get a shirt or blouse out at a time and iron.  She thought I would do better / faster with a steam iron even if it were more expensive.

I didn't have to do chores as a child.  The only thing I did was set the table before eating dinner every day.  Back then, we actually sat down at a the table for a meal.

Hi @chickenbutt .  Haven't seen you in awhile.  Hope you are doing well.

I don't think any child should have to iron, cook, clean baseboards, etc.

My mom was also a clean freak @MoJoV .  I didn't have to do any chores.
