I can remember before 1965 (when we moved to a new house) we were living in a small house In Queens, NY.  I had to wash & dry the dishes since we didn't have a dishwasher then.  I was in the third grade.

I also had to make my bed everyday, dust furniture and clean my room. When it snowed I had to help shovel.

Keeping my room neat and clean and ironing, which was frequent with 4 females' clothing,- my mother's, 2 sister's and of course my own.

Washing and/or Drying Dishes...I couldn't understand why we didn't have a dishwasher.  We moved during my freshman year of college and we still didn't have a dishwasher.  When I asked, the answer I received was that my parents didn't want to give up any cabinet/storage space.

To this day, I still don't have a dishwasher (besides me).  Ayi yi yi

Putting milking machines together, starting dinner (my mother finished after helping my father milk the cows, since my brothers were in college).  Pulling yellow rocket weeds and picking up rocks n the fileds before planting.

My mother was a fanatic about house cleaning and she did most of it herself. Because we kids did not do it as well as her. She was a perfectionist.

I could not make my bed to her satisfaction  because the bottom sheets had to have hospital corners and my bed never perfect enough for her.

When I was in HS, I learned to cook in Home Ec, because she never gave us a chance to prepare meals other than peel potatoes or carrots. The only food she allowed me to cook was Rice A Roni.

I washed the dishes every night as a teen.

That was the punishment my husband chose for the kids when they got into trouble.  They hated that more than being grounded!

We had wrought iron railing that would rust and my sister and I had to sand the rust off so it could be repainted. I didn't like any chores, though we did get allowance.

All of them, clearing the table, washing dishes, doing laundry, ironing, cleaning the bathroom, dusting, vacuuming, but the worst was washing the panelled walls.  There were four of us girls but i had to do it all since I was the oldest (and my mother hated me.)  Then when I was done I had to watch the two youngest kids outside.
