Re: Check your debit card receipts

I had a strange thing happen at a grocery store a few weeks ago. I was using my Discover card & the total was around $35. I ran my card through the credit card reader & it asked me to verify the amount which was $30 more than my total. When I questioned the clerk he quickly hit some buttons on the register & cancelled the transaction. I ran my card again & the total was correct. I got to thinking about it later & I think he must have hit $30 cash back. Since it was a credit card & not debit it wouldn't have worked anyhow. I really think he intended to take that cash back for himself. I wonder if I should have said something to the manager. I can't remember his name & I haven't seen him in there again. Always double check the receipts before you leave the register.

Oooh sorry that happened OP.That's why we don't ever use Debit Cards ( we use a couple of Credit Cards) & we keep all receipts for a looooong time & like VCamp we check accounts online. Hope you can recoup the overcharge

Based on recommendation from financial adviser, I don't ever use my debit card to purchase anything. I only use it to deposit funds at the bank! A debit card gives anyone direct access to your bank account! I use a credit card and also keep receipts until I reconcile with bank account statements. I also check online very often! That said, my credit card number was used in two cities (and in two stores that I have never been in) on the other side of the state!! Bank took care of it immediately! Just can never tell what unlawful people will do....

Me either. They don't offer the same protection.

They are proposing a new bill that would offer more protection of debit card users. I would feel more comfortable if this bill passed.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

Try going back to the store to see if they can look at their accounting records for the day. I am sure your financial statement has information about the time of transaction and location. The store can use that information to look at the records of receipts for the day. If it was a cash withdrawal, or cashier charged someone else's order to yours, it will be hard to prove it wasn't processed by you. I always take a quick scam of the receipt before I leave the store, just to check for no crazy charges added. Good luck.

Hmmmm, I think you're on to something! I always double check when I'm at a certain store, because they seem to be very inaccurate w/ the prices of items - I watch as they ring them up, and if they have to bag my items, so be it!

Re: Check your debit card receipts

I always check my bank account before shredding any receipts to make sure the amount is correct. I also watch the register. Maybe hubby forgot something. I've had a debit card since they became available & use it for just about everything. Never had a problem or wrong amount.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

I am the OP. I called my card issuer just to see what they recommended (my financial institution was closed). They said to call my bank and see if they could request a retrieval of the receipt. So I will do that tomorrow. My bank (credit union) can sometimes be a little hokey about these things, but I will push. I also plan on calling the grocery store to see what their records may reflect.

Lesson learned for sure. All future receipts are going to be placed in an envelope from now on. Funny today, DH used the card and handed me the receipt when he came home.

Many places can look up purchases by debit or credit cards. I know I have done this at Target and other stores if I lose my receipt or forget to bring it with me. I have never tried it at a grocery store though. Do you do internet banking? You should be able to go online and look at your purchases. It probably won't give you an itemized bill but just give you the totals from the visit to the store.

Was it Giant Eagle by chance? If you have the Advantage Card you can look online at your purchases and total.
