At my target they usually have three or four cashiers open and maybe ten empty cashier lines unattended.
Me too. I appreciate that for whatever reason, people like to use self checkouts. I hate them. If I have any sort of store coupon or store credit, I can't use them. I am not clever at bagging my own stuff, and not speedy either. Every time I've done it, something always screws up and it becomes a PITA. It doesn't make anything easier or faster for me. When the (mostly vanished now) Fresh & Easy stores made self checking/bagging the only option I stopped going there.

I like them. There's still a cashier that oversees them.

This is a timely topic. I go to my closest Target about once a week.
Yesterday their was a sign that they were changing the store around (I don't recall the exact verbiage). The jewelry area was either moved or gone and some of the woman's clothing was moved into that area.
I usually puruse the clothing but I was tired so I didn't. I hope they are not shrinking it down; I scored some good summer tops this year.

So far, at my store, they removed the jewelry counter and replaced that area with more women's clothing. (Frankly, I think they have way too many clothes crammed together - you can't even get your cart through fashion). The only other change I've noticed is that they put maternity in with the sleepwear. Have you noticed any changes at your store?
Same as you, jewelry replaced by clothing. Other things have been moved, like the workout clothes weren't where they used to be but I'm not sure where they went. I wasn't looking for them, I just noticed they're gone. I'm not sure about the maternity. I'm wondering if things will be constantly moving while they do their remodeling until they're done and things are in their final places.

I rarely shop at Target because I absolutely hate their parking lot.

I'm a lifelong Target fan. My experiences with Target, regardless of size or layout, have almost always been very positive. I despise self-checkouts everywhere, even if I only have a couple of items. I even submitted a complaint to Target's HQ (as if they were going to change things due to my comments). I've had very few problems finding store employees to help me, and the service has been great, almost 1,000% of the time. At least at the Targets around *us*, the staff seem to be very well-trained and know how to treat customers. It's rare that I encounter substandard service there. It's just the lack of bodies staffing the registers these days, and the proliferation of self-checkouts everywhere. Maybe a sign of the times. But I hate it, and will go wait in a line with a human working the lanes. Walmarts are ok. We really only go there for prescriptions, and maybe a few small items. We buy almost everythiing at Targets and at the grocery store. Even when we've been shopping at Target, and not needed help, as we've passed by staff -- as they stocked shelves, even -- they oftentimes cheerfully greeted us, asking if there's anything that they can help us find. That's service, with a capital, "S." Good prices are fabulous. Most Americans aren't drowning in dollars, and thus, have to watch their budgets. But prices are #2 for *us*, after good, sincere, competent customer service.

I wouldn't know because I'm not a fan of Target and normally only go right after Christmas (if then). My Target is really clean, well lit with super wide aisles which I appreciate but pricewise, they just can't compete with Wal-Mart (and I despise that store) and Meijer. Their clothing lines normally run three sizes too small and I just gave up trying to figure out if something might fit.

I've shopped at Target regularly for decades. I have their credit card, cartwheel, get free shipping, 5% off, the whole deal. I stayed with them thru the credit card hacking and couldn't care less who goes to the bathroom where. But I will say they have "softened" over time. They used to be absolutely terrible with returns. Their cs has stepped up big time after the hacking.
Glad they got rid of the jewelry counter. It was a huge waste of space. There was a time they replaced watched batteries at the counter. I remember when they sold diamonique!

My local Target still has that old snack bar that just sells hot dogs and popcorn. They really need to bring in Starbucks or the other food places the other stores have. Hardly any shoppers go to it. There is a Panera, a McDonald's, a Burger King, a KFC, Wendy's, Little Caesar's, Chic fil-A, a pit beef place, and Taco Bell all within walking and driving distance so that's where people go if they're out and want something to eat. Their plus-size section is atrocious and mixed right in with the maternity, so half the time I don't know what items are which. The prices are also a lot higher on cleaning and beauty/health products. I do like the grocery section though, they offer some items other stores don't and I use the Cartwheel app for savings. The store is clean and bright and less crazy than Walmart. But it's just not a store I frequent that often.

I'm not a huge Target shopper even though there is one right across the street from me at work. However, I have a bridal shower to attend soon and the couple is registered at Target so I'll have to make my way in there. Target has the worst system for their registry so I anticipate this poor couple is going to be taking back a ton of duplicate merchandise.
