Cashier at grocery store tells me my total is $7.40. I give him a $10 bill, a quarter, a dime, and a nickel. He holds out the change, spread out in his palm, to me and says, "It's $7.40." I say, "Isn't that 40 cents?" He puts the nickel on top of the quarter and says, "30," and then puts the dime on top of that and says, "40". He then fumbles around in the cash register as I gather up my little bag. Then he hands me my change -- $3.20.

Okey dokey!

In two different stores yesterday, cashiers waiting on me were so deeply engrossed in conversations of zero consequence with other cashiers that they didn't even acknowledge me, just started moving my merchandise through the code reader. I had to interrupt them to ask a question about an item at each place BEFORE they moved that one through.

No wonder internet shopping is so prevalent.
