Re: Cell phone call yesterday

YES!! And it got so bad recently (at least 50 calls by 1:00pm starting at 5:00) and it resulted in getting a  new number from AT&T!!!  I was told in my case (I was getting calls locally, statewide, nationwide as well as various points in the world!)  I was told there was nothing they could do about it.  They weref using MYnumber to scam and call other numbers!!!  I even had voice mails yelling "WHY ARE YOU CALLING ME????"....

No one can telll me exactly what the scam is, but the phone (after a few years of random calls) became useless to me with my existing number.  On my new number I've had three of these calls already.  I now just let them ring until done.  No voicemails and I don't answer.  Everyone that knows me knows to leave a message.

As I said, the phone company called it a scam and for some reason they were really using my old number.  They said it could even be a hack (I'm doubting that, but what do I know?) and that the CS guy said he even gets them and he's been working at our local store for at least 5 years and can't get them to stop.  They can't block these numbers as they are so random.

So, if you're getting these calls, do not answer.  I believe this alone tells them they've reached a viable number.  If you've already done so, don't  answer any more, don't even "refuse" them, just let it ring and go to voicemail.

I tell you it's frustrating and ridiculous to spend 1k on a phone and service and end up being hijacked..... Woman Mad

Good luck!

@Nightowlz

Sometimes if you answer and tell them to stop, that tells scammers your phone number is valid and a live number and they'll sell it to other scammers

But in your case, your darned if you do and darned if you dont since that person called you continuously whats a person to do.

[ Edited ]

ETA:  I just went through my phone and the number I received the call from came through as 38670534587.  It came through as I typed it so I knew it wasn't a standard USA number.  I googled it and it said it was from Slovenia and was a scam call.

Re: Cell phone call yesterday

I get many calls a day that say United States - they are scam/fraud calls. There are so many ways they try to get through on phones these days. I've also gotten 000-000-0000 or 111-111-1111. No clue how these even get through.

Best thing - don't answer, just block

Re: Cell phone call yesterday

@grandma2pkmh,

A quick google search says that number based in Detroit, MI.    Could’ve just been a misdial.

I’ve gotten the “Hey Grandma” scam call 4x in barely 2 weeks.   My responses to my “grandson” should have let the caller know “Grandma” doesn’t love or care about him anymore!

Yes I know they sell those numbers. I just got tired of him calling every day multiple times. At least he has not called since I did that. LOL!!! It's been at least 3 weeks.

Maybe they will think there is an issue with the number if I keep answering & hang up without saying anything.

Re: Cell phone call yesterday

Please don't mis-understand.  I did not answer the call and I did block it.  I just have never had a call show "United States" and not the name of a city & state or say unknown.  I  am well aware of all the scams going around these days.  I have Nomorobo on my home phone and report robo calls daily.

Re: Cell phone call yesterday

There has been a ton of publicity about this phone call, part of an early warning system, that all cell phones in the US would get.  It was just a test.
