I have to call this week and make an appt. for my husband to see a surgeon about having one cataract done (removed, right??). His other eye is ok- doesn't need anything done.
His eye doctor gave us the name of two surgeons- two different practices. One does traditional surgery and the other one does laser. Our doctor kind of favors the laser, but said it was up to us. Well, we don't have an opinion as neither one of us has ever had this done.
So, I thought I'd post here. I'm going to do some googling, but thought I'd look for comments from people here to see what your experiences have been.

Hi Giget,
May 2 or 3 years ago, hckynut talked about his cataract surgery and the type of lens used (not the type of procedure). Anyway, thought you might do a search here and on the Wellness thread to see if you can find it, as he provided some comprehensive information.
I'd recommend that you page him, but his wife recently had a stroke, so don't know when he'll be back here checking threads.
Much good luck to your husband. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks. I'll look and I know about Cindy's stroke and was glad to read the update on her.

My brother had cataract surgery on both eyes (one at a time) before he passed away in Sept. I took him to his first appt. and was able to watch the procedure on a TV behind a glass wall. It was fascinating. He had laser and it was a very easy process. He was absolutely thrilled, especially after the second surgery. He called me one day and said "gosh, I never knew that our bedroom carpet was blue". OMG, I'm so happy that he was able to enjoy his new eyesight if even for a little while.

I had laser donevfor cateracts on both of my eyes amonth apart, 4 years ago. A true miracle for me, I have been very near sighted since the age of 7, I am now 58 and do not wear any glasses or contacts. Very seldom do I need readers. Laser was the only procedure that was presented as an option to me.

I had both eyes none last year (2013) 2 weeks apart and it was the best thing I ever did! I was scared to death as it was laser surgery and you have to be somewhat awake for it. But I was given a light sedative and I was fine. My distance vision went back to 20/20. I still need a prescription for reading but it's better than before the surgery. I had clear lenses put in rather than multifocal. Since there was only a strong "chance" I would not need glasses with multifocal and my insurance did not cover them, I opted for the clear. The multifocal would have cost $10,000 additional. Best of luck to you.

my mom had this done.....one eye was done last year, the other eye the year before. she had the laser surgery and was in and out of there in probably less than an hour. of course she did have some bruising and swelling so she didnt make any plans for at least a week, but she was doing well and the procedure seemed quite easy. every once in a while she does need her readers if the light is low, but overall the procedures were a success.
make sure to have bags of frozen peas or corn....they help well to reduce the swelling quickly.

My Mother had laser surgery on both eyes, approximately a year apart. My brother (who is a physician) chose the doctor for her. Be sure to find a doctor who does MANY of these procedures, and by MANY I do not mean dozens. I mean that he has done HUNDREDS.
Just come right out and ask him how many of these procedures he has done, it is a logical question to ask. These are the only eyes your husband will ever have. Not every procedure comes out perfectly and no doctor will ever tell you that it does. MOST do.

Let me give you one piece of advice that seems like it's coming out of left field, but it's from personal experience.
If you have ANY concerns about his memory at this time, please consider whether you want him to have the light sedation he will get for the procedure.
I only say this because my mom had both hers done a month apart and what we didn't realize was early dementia got significantly worse afterward.
That really goes for ANY procedure that requires sedation.
