Re: Cataract Surgery....need input

Theres nothing to cataract surgery these days.  It's so routine, I had mine in the morning and kept a dental appointment in the afternoon.  They have "surgery centers" where they have patients lined up like an assembly line. You're in and out very fast.  The biggest annoyance is having to use drops several times a day afterwards.

Many people, myself included, develop a film over the eye after surgery and must go back and have it zapped by laser in the doctor's office.  It just takes a few minutes and is painless.

I figure we have to see, if possible, so I'd do it. One at a time though, not 2 at once. I'd say the same of any other replacements too. One at a time.

Absolutely.  I thought someone here said she had both done at the same time.  I can't seem to find it now.  Could it have been "deleted"????

Anyway, I don't know of any doctor who woud do two cataracts on the same day.  They put a patch on my eye, so how could anyone "see" with both eyes patched?  I have heard of people who were all bandaged up, had eye patches, etc... I just had a gauze square with a piece of tape holding it on.  I took it off that evening.

@sophiamarie

I read that one too and my Dr. would not do both of mine at one time, even though I asked if he could.

Re: Cataract Surgery....need input

I had both eyes done in the year 2014, not at the same time, two weeks apart.  The only thing I can complain about is the drops prior to and after surgery.  I loved my doctor and there is no pain associated with the surgery, before or after.  The first time I watched TV after the surgery I told my daughter I couldn't believe the colors I was seeing, I believe I was seeing the shows through a fog prior to surgery.  What a pleasure it was to see everything in true color again.

Just make sure your mother understands everything the doctor will be doing and perhaps you can help her with the drops.  Good luck to your Mom, she will be glad she did it.

I had early cataracts too although in my 40's. I detailed why in a previous post long ago that most probably remember so don't want to be repetitive but suffice it to say it was life changing.  The glare from the catarcts had become unbearable and with the insertion of the artifiical lenses I no longer need to wear glasses.  I was always nearsighted and it was just so exciting to be able to take a shower and not be fearful of falling, slipping or seeing something that may or may not be an insect in the tub with you.  Once a spider was in there and I didn't see it until I put my glasses on.  Hated that.  Best experience ever to be able to take a shower and see, same with waking up in the morning seeing without reaching for a pair of glasses.

Re: Cataract Surgery....need input

Not good news for me. I had my right eye done. My retina "expanded". I went to a retinal specialist and he gave me drops to put in my eye. If things had not gone well I would have gone blind in that eye. I did not have my left eye done. The retina doctor told me there is always a small chance that the retina can be damaged during cataract surgery.

Both said it's painless and were very pleased with the results and virtually no down time. The downside is that there's no guarantee they wont come back...

You're wrong, they cannot come back because your natural lens is removed and replaced with a man-made lens.

@Tyak I was told that artificial lenses can get cloudy but is easily remedied with a laser treatment.  I've had mine for many years now and so far so good.

I HAD IT DONE AND IT WAS EASY AS CAN BE, FIRST TIME I COULD DRIVE WITHOUT GLASSES THAT DAY, IT WAS OVER BEFORE I KNEW IT, NOTHING TO FEAR. FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT JUST DO IT.

  1. I hope it is as easy as most of you say. I get my eye done at the end of May. Can't enjoy reading here.
  2. Wish they could of fixed my cross eye but then that was over 75 years ago.
