What is the fascination with this phenomenon???   It's just another bird.  People think cuz they see one it's them that they came to visit.  Then they have to associate with a person who passed.  I don't think a bird purposely visits anyone.

@rms1954    Ha! They visit the person who puts out the best hand-outs.  In the case of cardinals it may be suet.  And they do it purposely, words gets around the cardinal community.

Who cares if someone thinks that the bird is visiting them ?  I personally don't believe it, but unlike many here I don't know everything. A little whimsy never hurt anyone

Where I live there are no Cardinals.  But when my Dad was buried  where was a tiny white Butterfly kept flying around. So if I happen to see one ( flying around in my back yard) I  say "Hi Dad".

Cardinals bring me comfort and when I see one I always say hello to my late husband. You can think what you want and that is fine but why rain on other people's parades.  Why do that to people who are grieving.  WHY????

Most likely deep down people dont believe a Cardinal is a visiting loved one who has passed.  Its a lovely thought and just might give a grieving person a smile.  No harm to anyone.

I don't know anyone who is a dyed in the wool believer that it's really and truly a visit from their deceased loved one.  But if it gives a gentle reminder of someone who has passed and gives a momentary acknowledgment of the blessing they were in your life, who is it hurting?  I've lost some special people in my life, like I'm sure we all have, and there are just things from time to time that occur out of the blue that remind me of them. Sometimes I smile, or weep, or both. Either way, I'm grateful.  It's not necessary to pick on someone for something that gives them comfort.

I grew up surrounded by family members who loved cardinals; nothing pleased them more to have frequent sightings of a pair of these birds near the house.

My parents had a personalized plate for their vehicle with a male and female cardinal, and I always choose new garden flags for mom with cardinals on it.

The presence of cardinals in the trees behind my house always makes me smile and feel good.   I choose to feel the joy of such a simple sighting.

For centuries red cardinals have been thought to represent the resurrection, the blood of Christ, the blood of life.

It is no different than those that feel there is the same significance in rainbows or butterflies..

None of us feel the same about anything, believe the same about anything. To me what's important to be respectful of others.
