@JaneMarple I'm sorry your account was affected. I think we'll have to start re-thinking carrying large wads of cash from now on to stay under the radar. I don't know which is worse.

DH & I were both affected by the breach. We were also the victims of identity theft a few years ago. The IRS notified us that someone tried to file a Federal tax return in our names using our SS numbers. Ironically, they were attempting to collect a refund at a time when we owed money!!
That’s what triggered the IRS inquiry. We owed money the previous few years. They shut them down but DH & I went through a very stressful time.We spent countless hours & days securing our information. We now have a 7 year security freeze on our credit.
As a result I don’t think anyone was able to do anything with our information. But it’s still unnerving !! Now our monitor needs monitoring!! God help us!!

I have not been with Capital for over 5 years. I am with Barclays and they are on top of any suspicious activity.

I see people saying they were affected. Does that mean if your data was affected you have already received notification from Capital One? I have accounts with them for many years but haven't gotten any notices from them. Maybe my info is too old?

My account is fine but my information is out there among millions of other people.
Capital One said Monday personal information, including Social Security and bank account numbers, of more than 100 million individuals was compromised in a massive data theft that led to the arrest of a Seattle woman.
Paige A. Thompson is accused of stealing data from Capital One credit card applications in what is one of the top 10 largest data breaches ever.
The FBI arrested Thompson Monday for the theft, which occurred between March 12 and July 17, court records show. Among the data allegedly collected from a company cloud-based server were Social Security and bank account numbers.
Capital One said in a news release that “100 million individuals in the United States and approximately 6 million in Canada” were affected.
