Can someone explain petites vs regular?

Hi, I bought new jeans (online) and I love them but once again they are way too long. I like my jeans just long enough but not long that you walk on them for heavens sake!..lol. Now I have to have them hemmed. This happens time and time again when I get regulars in jeans.

Do I belong in petite jeans?

Can someone please explain, is petite just shorter in length or petite in other areas too? Because regulars fit me fine everywhere else, except the length. (I am 5 feet 5 & 3/4 inches tall so Im not that short so I dont get why this length issue is a problem with regular jeans all the time).
