The idea of splitting CA comes up every decade or so, it used to be because of cultural differences.
First, know that people will sign almost any request to put something on the ballot, it doesn't mean they would ever vote for it. They had an expose on that the other night, here on local news. People didn't even understand what was being proposed, but agreed to get it on the ballot.
The guy behind it is a big techie, and he wants the Bay Area to be called the state of "Silicon Valley." Can you even imagine San Franciscans voting for that?
It's not gonna happen, I'd bet on it.
Hey Noel, your post explains it (the petitioning) perfectly. I have heard of it being proposed in the past. It sounds really ridiculous.
I also think tansy might be right about gerrymandering. So you would live in the state of Silicone Valley and I would live in West or South California!
The law by petition is called Direct Democracy, I don't think all states have it. It can be overthrown by the courts, though, as we saw with Prop 8.
I don't think we know why this guy wants 6 states, I'm guessing it's about money. CA is already the 8th leading economy IN THE WORD, and most of that might get concentrated in the state of Silicon Valley, LOL.
It is about money, usually. The state GOP tried to Gerrymander a part of SoCal a couple of years ago, where the oil producing area would all be in one congressional district. As if people wouldn't notice. It didn't happen.

It's not the dumbest thing I've heard but it's running a close second.

You know, I had forgotten about the attempt a few years ago but you're right. I bet the guy is counting on people either not noticing or caring what would actually happen. I think he does live in Silicone Valley. Figures, huh?
Yep, it's ALWAYS about the money

They propose the same thing in NY. Upstate wants to separate from the NYC area.
They actually wanted Crazy Carl Paladino to be the new leader (and put it on a petition that was going no where fast).
The yokels up here forget that the money is downstate...THEY subsidize us!
They are all furious about the SAFE Act...some guys on the radio actually want an armed rebellion like the Founding Fathers.

Wow Terrier, that really is off the deep end. Can't imagine anyone would think that would fly either here or there!!

Moxie - A lot of the time the fools DO decide...that's the problem.
BTW - I ate off your Moxie platter last night - sausage with peppers and onions, and I thought of you!

I posted about the nutty guy on the radio before. On the day before the 4th of July, he talked about armed rebellion being the only way to go and suggested everybody get prepared "locked and loaded".
He is the guy who was put in a mental hospital for observation because he thought that the guv had him followed...and had agents dressed as trees in his backyard taping his every movement. He was carrying a gun and walking in the snow barefoot when they took him away in an ambulance.
Now he's back...and nuttier than ever.

This sounds something like when Staten Island wanted to secede from the five boroughs of Manhattan.
Yeah, uh, good luck with that, techie dude.

Ooohhh, when I think about this, I kind of like it. California would have 12 senators, instead of the two idiots we have now.
The guy has a point; CA is huge and diverse, and one state government struggles to serve all those needs. If you look at the proposed map, Jefferson and South CA have absolutely nothing in common, and could easily be separate.
