CHRISTMAS QUESTION

Can anyone tell me why it is NOT offensive to say "CHRISTMAS in July" and MERRY CHRISTMAS and why it is offensive to say "CHRISTMAS" and "MERRY CHRISTMAS" when it really is the actual time? {#emotions_dlg.unsure}
