Speaking of velvet, it seems to be making a comeback.  Velvet and its cousin velour.

Last night I saw that Isaac Mizrahi has a piece or two, a tunic if I recall.

I used to love wearing velvet pants for the holiday, especially black.  It seems they're coming back

You could probably say a lot without having to spell it out for your guests by sending a formal invitation.  If the invitation looks high end, has elegant script, and mentions cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres, they will probably realize it is more formal.  Chances are you'll get questions from most people about attire, anyway.  

Every year, I host a Christmas Eve dinner with a handful of guests followed by a cocktail party afterwards.  While most of my guests dress up, I wouldn't mind if someone showed up dressed down.  I would actually feel bad for them, as they would look out of place and may feel uncomfortable.  Whenever I see photos of holiday gatherings from my friends on Facebook, there is always that one Uncle somewhere in the photos who wore jeans and a sweatshirt and looks out of place.  It won't reflect on you or your party if someone misses the mark with their attire.  At the end of the day, the goal as a good host/hostess is to enable your guests to feel comfortable in your home.

@Noel7 I love my velour pieces. They look appropriate in most every setting and your jewelry choices can easily change it up. And I am comfortable!

People may joke about our fashions in the 80's but I loved wearing velvet above and corduroy below.  Looks like a very young Phoebe Cates in that photo below.

I went to an evening wedding in the 80s and I wore a long dress similar to the one you put up.  Straight arms. a bit of a high waist if I remember, velour, deep forest green. 

It was right before Christmas, a couple of days only.  I wore part of my hair up and DH put a sprig of holly where the hair was gathered.  Oh, I can still remember that

The bride was a bit younger than I was at the time, she came up and told me how beautiful it was and that she wished she could dress like I did.  I knew and loved her parents but they were a little strict.

I like getting dressed up to go out ... but definitely not getting dressed up for a house party!

Ultimately whatever you decide to have on your invitations, and no matter what anyone shows up wearing, it's about your guests, the joy of the season and your new home! Have fun!

Most people dress festive for a holiday party.   Festive can be really dressy or very casual.  I don't think I would specify a dress code for a holiday party at my home.  People can decide how dressed up they want to be for themselves, IMO

Depends - If your guests are professionals they will prefer a more dressy affair. 

If you have a mish mash of folks, then you can expect just about anything.  Some will be dressy, some dressy caual, and some casual.  There could als be those who dress with a goofy looking sweater or other accessory.
