I think it just depends on the friends you are asking and what kind of party you are having. Work people and customers/clients and a catered more formal cocktail type affair would seem more dressy while family and close friends and home made dinner where everyone knows everyone well would seem more casual.

Also , if your DH doesn't want it to be dressy shouldn't you consider his feelings? Not a good way to start off in a marriage asserting your will over his feelings without considering compromise or discussion.

I think it depends on what age group you are having!! I will just say the younger crowd does have their own opinion of festive, or holiday attire compared to senior citizens! So you probably will see a little bit of everything which in my opinion is o.k.!! If you like dressing up you should do it!! Have a wonderful time!!

Why do you have to have a dress code? I would just lets people come as they feel appropriate or say casual dress if you must specify. I am not sure how I would dress if I got an invitation that said 'Chiristmas Attire'. Maybe I'm the only one but the parties I go to don't say how to dress and most times there is no written invitation. LM

Haven't you ever gotten all dressed up for a special occasion? It's a lot of fun! Do you really think wearing sloppy jeans is appropriate all the time?

I'm guessing that many women have holiday outfits they've only worn once or twice and would love to get a little more wear out of.

Specifying "Festive Holiday Attire" gives people a chance to wear something different and fun if they would like. Not everyone wants to come in what they wear every single weekend to run their errands!

I absolutely hate dressing up for parties. I don't like the idea of having to go out and buy something just for a few hours. I don't have dressy clothes. I have been known to make an excuse to not attend if it's going to be dressy. I will wear nice pants, shirt etc if I just but if you want glitter, dress, hose, suits and ties you can forget about us showing up. We are very casual in Arizona. Clean jeans are dressing up.

Why not ask your friends? Some may not have a dressy outfit or may not be able to afford one for your party.

You might already know the answer: Do your friends like to dress up or dress casually?

And how dressy do you mean? Like an old fashioned cocktail dress?

Jeans are my attire (except for weddings and real formal events) so anyone inviting me knows I will dress up jeans with probably a really great pair of dress shoes/boots and a fancy silky top with a vest or something. My friends are casual also like that and the guys usually just wear jeans and tees regardless of what the females choose to wear and that's ok with me. It's not about attire anyway but just enjoying the company! Life's too short to worry about what anyone is wearing!

My husband and I love to dress up, however not everyone does, so I think a nice casual atmosphere is probably best for the majority of people. The main thing is having fun and enjoying the company and the evening!

Times have changed, one poster mentioned the difference now, and I agree. For the most part, unless the party is at a very wealthy home, at a rented hall in the museum or the like, people don't dress up like they used to, meaning cocktail dresses or a ball gown. For one thing, outfits like that are not comfortable.

You can still get a dressy look with a nice pair of slacks and a dressy top. Nordstroms has a lot of examples of that.

And... usually the younger the crowd, the less dressy they want to be.
