@Mominohio :  I lived in High Desert (Ridgecrest/China Lake) for 25 yrs and guess what? The temperature dropped unusually low one December and our pipes froze, burst and insurance ended up paying $45,000 to fix our problem. So, yes, it happens in California and not just in the mountains!

I'm not sure why you are telling me this. I made no comment about it that would lead me to be told yes it happens in CA. ???? not sure what you are getting at.

People are having several breaks and no parts to fix them, My husband had someone from his company in another state overnight parts to us. He'll fix ours and our neighbors. They paid $400 to get one fixed it took 5 minutes and cost $400. And people aren't just having one area break. This is a real disaster. I feel so bad for those who cannot do it themselves and can't afford to pay for it.

It may be a month getting our power back on...and no I do not live in Texas anymore. We are super rural and most have nowhere to go so cant drain water pipes. Its getting pretty desperate now over 6 days. I will be ok until Saturday when it drops to 18 degrees and no power. Crossing fingers and toes.

Honestly if I knew then what I know now....I would have taken up plumming or HVAC and NOT have been a Respiratory Therapist. I was never paid my true worth...especially now during the pandemic. Yea....or a car mechanic even LOL. I would do it free for those who have no money...or would do in the tradition of barter...we do that here rurally. My best to all. PS...sorry for my big black letters....Im going blind. My best to yall xxxxx Stormy

@Stormygirl  I am so sorry to hear that you are without power.  I hope you have a fireplace at least and some lanterns, a kerosene heater and cookstove.

I wanted to thank you for your replies about my nephew being on the vent after a massive stroke.  He had a really bad week and then began to rally.  This past weekend he was taken off the vent and his oxygen levels are good.  He still has the trach because he has to undergo the repair of the cranial flap that was done to relieve the pressure from the stroke.  He is talking and has the same great personality and sense of humor.  He has a LONG road ahead of him though.  Once again thank you for taking the time to respond to the questions I had.

I pray your lights and heat are back on soon.

@tends2dogs goodness I have been thinking of you and your nephew alot....and wondered how things worked out. Reading your post maybe I did pick a good profession and was my calling, good money or not. Makes me happy to know I gave some sound information to you even if i had no access to his chart.

I am so happy to hear he is making a recovery. I had no idea he just got off the ventilator recently. Wow he is a trooper! Thank you for the update. Yea we have no heat, no stove, just generator running the basics. When I was younger this would have been fun LOL.....not now though. I will make it one day at a time! Thanks and Hugs xxxxxx Love Stormy

For information about the federal/national power grid and why Texas opted to have its own (which must not be working perfectly), you can find much about both on the internet.

Here's just a sample:

<< As winter storm blackouts roil Texas, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the nonprofit that operates Texas' electrical grid, has gained sudden notoriety – as well as the unusual fact that Texas has its own power grid.

The U.S. has three power grids: one covers the eastern U.S., another the western states and the Texas grid covers nearly the entire state.  (maps of the grids are posted on the internet.)

The grid has been thrust into the national spotlight as extreme energy demand and overloaded frozen utility plants contributed to widespread power outages across Texas, experts said.>>

From what I've read online from many sources, Texas opted out of the national grid system and created its own many years ago.  Recent weather conditions might call into question that decision.  I'm sure the state never dreamed things could turn out the way they are!

@novamc1

Thanks for the info.  I wasn't sure I had heard it correctly.
