Burning question of the day-Do you put your garland on the tree before or after ornaments?

I always put it on the very last thing because that is what my parents did but I am rethinking it. Trying to lay the garland in a circle usually results in ornaments being knocked off and sometimes broken and the garland can cover up ornaments already on the tree. So, should I put it on first or last?
