Re: Budget concerns-action steps

I just checked how Boomers are doing overall. I googled stats on our net worth and average income. It was surprising to me that an entire generation, for the most part, is having difficulty making ends meet.

This was a great topic @smoochy . Some excellent advice and points have been made. As far as the poster doing better in retirement than while working? I suspect she rents and won't be getting a tax bill this October? Our school tax went up to $12,500 for the year. Add to that a general tax bill and it has become ridiculously expensive to live on Long Island. Forgot about a fixed expense of $1000 a month for medical insurance with added drug costs of above $500.00. Won't even talk about gas and groceries. We are living in difficult times for many...

laws differ from state to state, but landlords can charge what the market will bear and whether they tell you they are raising rents because of real estate tax increases doesn't matter. They are allowed to charge what they like, for the most part and renters will pay it.

That's why at least a lease with capped rent helps @Lakelife62 . We were paying a lot less in rent when we left our apartment back in 2005 than new leasees were due to rent control. My son has the same in his apartment with rent control.

Re: Budget concerns-action steps

I have mentioned Souper Cubes or other cheaper brands before but we just made lunch out of soup frozen in these.  They make freezer leftovers neat to store, easy to see and easy to pop out for use.

No more miscellaneous bags of frozen mystery stuff to root through looking for something to eat!  Our freezer isn a jumbled mess now which is great.

Can you not see how this post, if it is even true, is inappropriate on a thread discussing ways to cut costs in retirement?

@4kittiesWhy would it not be true, its about pre planning this is the last I will participate in the thread. I am sorry there seems to be a bit of jealousy here for that I am sorry I am just lucky I guess

@I am still oxox You are housebound, why would anyone be jealous?  Money can't buy health, I would rather have health any day!

Re: Budget concerns-action steps

@smoochy

I understand what it's like to try and economize and to try and budget more.  However, it sounds like you are being very restrictive and cutting out so many things which you enjoy.  DH and I try to watch, we really do, but at the moment, we have had discussions saying --- we are both 74 and not in the greatest heaalth.  So, we do want to have a few things that we enjoy!  We can't do most of the things for fun like we used to, so mostly we stay at home and watch t.v.  Even though our cable bill is much higher than we would like, we pay it because this is what we do for entertainment.  We only go out to dinner or breakfast occasionally.  I would say respectfully, please don't restrict yourself so much that you cut off everything that you enjoy and that makes your life happier.

A couple of things which might help and these are things which you might already do.  If you get a daily newspaper, discontinue it.  We did this and we really don't miss it.  The paper was getting very expensive and truthfully is was getting to be a very poor printed object.  Instead we watch news on t.v. and look things up on the internet.

If you have expensive cable, maybe switch to a firestick or something similar.

So that you have an outing to look forward to, go out for breakfast or lunch once a month.

For things to do, your local library should have a calendar with free events or things which cost very little.

For groceries, if you haven't tried them previously, shop at Aldi's.  We do save a lot on fruits, veges, dairy, etc.

See if ARP or something like that can offer any cheaper rates on your car insurance.

When I was trying to cut costs earlier on, I started coloring my hair at home.  Much cheaper!  Now, I don't color at all but that's just a personal choice.

Instead of getting some basic beauty items are more expensive places, I shop for them at sally's, target, walmart, drugstores, dollar stores.

I shop at places like ollie's, big lots, rural king, dollar tree, etc. for all kinds of things like seasonal decorating items, books, cards, food items, snacks or all kinds, paper products, laundry and cleaning supplies, grooming proucts, etc.

Another thing I do is, instead of taking my car out for just one errand, I save as many errands up as I can and do them all on one trip.  Making a list of what you need and where you need to go - and then sticking to it, is very helpful.

Maybe these are all basic things, but they really help!!

I think you're very smart to dio what you're doing.

Re: Budget concerns-action steps

I think that people have different ideas about what is a need and what is a want.

Starting a savings plan in your younger years vs. waiting until older is another very wise decision.

Having a good financial advisor is also important. Planning ahead is vital if you want a comfortable retirement. I see materislism as having  played  a big part in our society.

@AngelPuppy1  that was a thoughtful post. Ive been pleased with the participation on this thread. To your point about not being overly restrictive, yes. I am rethinking a couple of things. It would be enjoyable for DH and I to make a monthly breakfast date. 😋 really like that idea. Re: cable, when it hit  $206/mo we ditched it for Sling. I can customize my plan to fit how we watch TV. This week I cut it back even further because we were paying for tons of channels we didnt use. Our bill will be $35 instead of $90. Woot! And I will still get most of the sports i want.
