Among the major announced revisions to the manual, known as DSM-5, is that Asperger's syndrome will now be included in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder "to help more accurately and consistently diagnose children with autism," the association said in a statement.
But the group made another big change that did not make as many headlines, though it is considered by many to be important.
The new DSM eliminates the term "gender identity disorder," long considered stigmatizing by mental health specialists and ... transgender activists.
That old diagnosis meant that a man who believed he was destined to be a woman was considered mentally ill.
No longer so.

....."The new DSM eliminates the term "gender identity disorder," long considered stigmatizing by mental health specialists and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists.
That old diagnosis meant that a man who believed he was destined to be a woman was considered mentally ill.

Here is the article http://inamerica.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/27/being-transgender-no-longer-a-mental-disorder-in-diagnost...
So before this date, it was classified as mental issue, billable by Doctors
It did. And in the 70s, the DSM said being gay was a mental illness. We know better now.
The same has occurred with trans people, their issue is no longer considered a disorder or mental illness. We know better now.
BTW, I quote my DSM 5, out not all that long ago, I can check the publish date for anyone interested, but will tell you it was more than 13 years in authoring the 5. It took a majority of clinicians to agree to diagnoses.
I agree with specialists who left gender dysphoria as a disorder because then someone who is in emotional turmoil,or in a crisis can get help/counceling without doctors turning them away because of insurance.gender dysphoria was left as a diagnosis to ensure that a transgender person could still access health care if needed. Hormone treatment would be one example. Another would be counseling for those who need help dealing with their emotions.
Many activists felt that the gender dysphoria diagnosis could be a powerful legal tool when challenging discrimination in health insurance plans and services.
The National Center for Transgender Equality said it was pleased with the change.
shoekitty, you are mistaken, it is not considered a disorder any longer.
I believe the article you referred to earlier also made that clear. People can access their insurance for therapy for many issues that are not disorders or mental illness.
I have read many articles, and spoke with the therapist next door. There is a big difference between Gender INDENTITY Disorder, and Gender Dysmorphia. No, there is no longer Gender Indentity Disorder as a mental illness. IT IS NOT A MENTAL illness. Okay, that clear, the medical association with the blessings of the National Center For transgender recognizes Gender Dysmorphia. . There is a big difference, and the Doctors have set criteria for distinguishing the two. Gender dysmorphia is addressing emotional issues , sadness, etc from hormones, transition and other issues. It is the only way for amany transgender to to be able to access their insurance.
Here is another source and it was dated a couple months ago

rest of article:

shoekitty,
There is a difference between dysphoria and disorder.
All I am saying is that you called it a "disorder" which is no longer true.
It is important to use the correct terminology, because "disorder" implies a mental illness, which being transgender is not.
The DSM is usually updated every 13 years, this time it took longer to update the 4 to the 5. Long and hard attention was paid to ensuring the latest scientific studies and information on autism spectrum and transgender.

People had better use common sense when they deal with doctors and the medical profession! Else they will find themselves in a world of trouble. Strange, I've never heard anyone denigrate common sense before.
