Re: Breaking: Empire State Building Protest

Well, they did their "thing," and are willing to pay the consequences.

Of course, they have fabulous engagement photos, unique in all the world.

She was born in a circus family, and she and her fiancé both free climb, which requires INCREDIBLE skill, strength, and determination.

I also remember Evel Knievel and his motorcyle jumps over buses, all broadcast live on television and approved.

And I remember the Wallenda family, the man who walked over Niagara Falls on a tightrope, all broadcast live and approved (by two different countries!), although the television channels made him wear a safety harness.

And yes, the French "Human Spider" who also free climbs, and has been arrested multiple times, is very well known.

And Olympian snowboarder Shaun White, who created moves no one had ever seen before, won Olympic medals.

Some people are just daredevils and have to do what they do, no matter what.  They know it is illegal and extremely dangerous, but it is their personal calling in life. They are not terrorists, or criminals, or crazy people.

In 1921 when they asked George Mallory why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, he answered, "Because it's there."

Yes, these athletes cause consternation for law enforcement and other officials, but I am sure if this couple asked for advance approval nowadays it would not be given.

I will say the Empire State Building understands that all publicity is GOOD publicity, especially since they put out the statement immediately today that their observation deck is a practical way for a memorable marriage proposal.

@FancyPhillyshopper   I forgot all about the Wallenda family.  I saw them in person decades ago when the father was still performing.

@Puzzle Piece There is no message here except LOOK AT US!!!!!!  Their actions invalidate the message.

Re: Breaking: Empire State Building Protest

Some people just like to live on the edge (no pun intended)

I know this isn’t exactly the same as far as heights go, but I remember 2 guys had tigers for their Las Vegas shows and one guy got seriously hurt in front of a live audience.

The guy had slipped on stage or had a stroke (can’t remember) and they figured their Tiger was trying to help him.

It is always interesting to see what news stories bring on the outrage in people.

All Olympians, actors, proformers, politians... want recognition.

There's nothing wrong with that, just as there is nothing wrong with the two who climbed the Empire State Building. No harm was done to any person or animal.

Obviously, people watched, were interested. It was rather exciting, who among us could do it, even attempt it. I was impressed.

This indeed was an unwise, costly, time consuming high jinx.   It was Not funny...but it was interesting. More guts than I would ever have.  I can't even get in a glass elevator.  I would walk up 15 floors first!!!  And I did once.  However, this news was better than murders, rape, treason...and other atrocities.       But , jail time ?  Oh give me break, lol ...our court system can be fly by night at times.   We let murderers, real criminals go free more times than I like to admit.  But we jail and execute the poor mainly.    A high profile lawyer gets you a lot in this country.

I didn't see this as a protest, just a statement.  Dangerous stunt whatever but pretty amazing actually.

It is pretty amazing how the feelings about this are polar opposites.

How did you feel about it @Mersha?

Re: Breaking: Empire State Building Protest

Many many opinions on this BUT the one big question remains...How in the world did they ever bypass any security to do such a thing?  Baffles my mind.  People should be more concerned with that, no?
