This would be like saying we're no longer just an association for Parents and Teachers because now we're the PTA. Or maybe we'll really change it up and be the TPA.
How does changing the name from Boy Scouts to Scouts (Boy Scouts of America) change anything other than the placement of the word boy? What am I missing here?
@SusieQ_2 . I don't understand either....it's like AARP no longer stands for American Association of Retired People. Or the SAT test no longer stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test....makes no sense to me.

@Lipstickdiva they have had to close many of these places in our area, because the old people are dying off, and the young ones aren't interested

My daughter was the same. She never made it out of being a Brownie.
My mother at the time was so disappointed. She was a "girl scout."

I am not happy about this. My mom was a Lifetime Girl Scout, I am, and my daughter is. I grew up watching my mom be a leader, then I was - until long after my daughter graduated. I also served on the local board.
There is no need for this. I don't like the way it was decided either, without consulting the Girl Scout organization. It's a slap in the face to them. ![]()

It’s akin to Kentucky Fried Chicken changing their branding to “KFC”
since not saying fried gives the consumer the illusion it’s healthier.
Oh, it’s still fried & unhealthy, but it’s now KFC.

The umbrella organization will retain its name, Boy Scouts
of America or BSA.
The term Cub Scouts, for kids 7-10 years old, is gender
neutral and also will go unchanged.
Boy Scouts, which includes kids from 10 to 17, will
become Scouts BSA in February 2019.

@MorningLover, it they want to be open to both boys and girls, they should drop the word "boy" altogether.
And if it's true that the GS are not on board with this, it likely will be very confusing for kids.

I live in an area of NJ where both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have among the highest per capita memberships in the nation.
Very happy that my sons were both very active in the same Boy Scout troop until they were no longer considered boys (18th birthday). and each had the opportunity to attend a National Jamboree in VA.
They were in many coed activities in middle and high schools. Boy scouts allowed them to be young men. Growing up without a father's daily presence, it was a good peer group for them. To this day, they greatly enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking and camping.
I think it will be difficult to get volunteer adult leaders for the new Scouts and I think it will be difficult to maintain Girl Scouts past the age of 12.
Scouting is such a worthwhile activity. Many parents, including most of my own siblings, opted for sports many day per week, 11 or12 months a year and passed on scouting.
Boy Scouts helped my sons to be responsible, independent and really learn valuable life skills. I am sad that the time has come to make the changes that are coming.
