I don't think that we all need to be and Emily Post in order to abide by some guidelines. I don't slurp my soup, and I don't shout in caps online. So sue me. :-)

I have to admit I found it puzzling, @suzyQ3.   Etiquette, to my way of thinking, is simple courtesy.    I think sometimes it's mixed up with hard-and-fast rules, but on the internet and in real life it really just boils down to taking others into consideration.   We don't need to change who we are to suit what others want, but still there's a way to be respectful of others.    I can't imagine being disdainful of this.

People love to say common sense is rare these days -- I think common courtesy is rare.   If we follow the "golden rule" it seems to me we want to at least try to be thoughtful of others, and that's part of what's called "etiquette" and it applies in real life and also on the internet.

Maybe one of the reasons we see complaints about people being angry, rude, and even cruel when they post online is partly a result of having one set of standards in real life encounters and a different set of standards with anonymous postings, forgetting we're interacting with other human beings here, too -- just as we do face-to-face.

Trying to say this delicately. It’s a put-off - a “don’t **** with me” response, and is...customary any time schooling, education or college or “society” is mentioned. It’s a middle finger to anyone different from the poster’s life experiences, to put it bluntly.

I have a relative who does the same thing. IMO it’s an aggressive compensation.

I think after you've been on these boards a while you know who uses bold text because it's easier to read, and who uses it because they believe whatever they have to say is more important than what anyone else has to say.

And that's a fact.

I come here occasionally but i don't pay attention to anyone's names or what type they use. I can't imagine spending so much time or energy here that I would actually be aware of such things or that I would care. I have never thought of Large or bold type as offensive or as carrying some hidden meaning. If one is that invested in something silly like these boards, it's probably time to step away, breathe, call a real friend, go for a walk, pet the cat, etc!

No, it really doesn't take much effort to recognize this.  Plenty of time left to breathe, call real friends, walk and pet the beasties.

It takes much more effort to disguise reprimanding posts and make them appear helpful.

Hi @suzyQ3

That "one poster" would be me. Prime topic? Not to me, but I like to talk and type a lot. Doesn't have to be a "prime topic"(whatever that is), prime to me is probably of no interest to others, like this thread, maybe?

If someone, anyone, feels berated by my use of "book educated", that would be on them. I see "highly educated" used all the time and very few say a thing, other than myself on occasion.

Have worked with and dealt with the "highly educated"(book smart), and those like myself with little "formal education". Don't know how high "degrees " go nowadays, but many of which I speak had doctorate degrees. What was different about them? Some no difference, others had/have the common sense of a p-ant, and wouldn't know real life from fiction.

For those that feel "berated" by the term "book smart", so be it. Wonder if "uneducated and/or low skilled" would make me feel "berated"? Nah, been referred to in much nastier terms.

The thing you mentioned about "slurp your soup", to me that falls into the common sense category, or how one was raised. Has nothing to do with highly educated or uneducated. And as far as those that feel offended or bothered by someone typing in all CAPS?

Now look how much I typed about this non-prime topic. Your summons is coming!   :-)     =^..^=

I agree with "him more intolerable", but only to some, maybe even many. Wonder if "him" ever looks at his reflections?  Interesting.

@hckynut, I can't believe that I forgot to address the concept of correct spelling. You stated in the post to which I replied that it doesn't matter as long as one is understood. I'm not into publicly correcting spelling errors, but I do think it's an important skill.

Othurwis, we cude just spel as we pleese.

As for grammar, I'm more with you on that. Of course it bugs me momentarily: I taught grammar skills for years. But I don't like tearing people down for their goofs.

@hckynut, there's one thing you can be sure of on the internet.

If you say, I'm not a rocket scientist, but - and then state your well thought out and heartfelt opinion, someone will come on and say -

I AM a rocket scientist, here's what I think.
