Black smooth top stove question

What a bugger to keep clean....I noticed today when the light was hitting it just right what a mess it is....I knew it did not look good but the light hitting it made it look just awful.

I clean it good after every use, it's only 2+years old but it has a greasy look to it....I clean it with dish soap water, rinse it several times then use a micofiber cloth to dry....what else can I do, HELP!

Get some Bartenders Friend and scrub!  Use a paint scrapper for and bits or grease that has dried.  I find this to be the best.  Every once in awhile, I will use white vinegar as well, that wil remove any residue, especially dish soap. Dry with a paper towel.

Re: Black smooth top stove question

Oh, boy do I feel for you, @Mom2Dogs.  I've had two of these in my lifetime.  The first black glass top wasn't bad.  Sure, it showed things but was fairly easy to clean and get looking pristine.

This one I have now by Whirlpool is absolutely horrible to get clean.  It's almost like having a mirror on your counter that you cook on-- every splatter, but even every tiny thing you do shows up, hideously.  Can't overemphasize the pain it is to keep clean looking!

I've tried the white, creamy lotion-like cleaners made for black glass stove tops.  They take tons of buffing, and not all that great on mine.

After cleaning, if I use Windex and then buff, that helps.  But weirdly, the best thing I've found so far is Weiman's Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish.  You still have to buff and buff (paper towels or microfiber cloth) but at least after all your effort it looks pretty decent.

I will not get a smooth top stove again!

I use Mr. Clean erasers that helps then go to bar keepers that helps too but still have a few marks that I can't get out.

@Somertime ....I do have the Bartenders friend and have used it in the past (liquid version).   I used it sparingly, there is not dried on food on the top so it must be grease reside, I don't know...I do clean it, ha!

I will give the vinegar a try, I always have that on hand, thanks!

Re: Black smooth top stove question

I have a black smooth top.  I have no trouble at all.  First I clean up the spills then apply a cooktop cleaner and polish.  When done it looks brand new and the polish protects the surface from scratches.

There are a few brands on the market and they all work pretty good.

Re: Black smooth top stove question

I agree with @Somertime, Barkeeper's Friend!  I sprinkle the powder on the damp stove top and buff in circles.  It is pretty effortless and leaves a nice clean shine after it's completely wiped off.  Isn't it amazing (gross!) how dirty the stove top can get.  This time of year when I get home from work the sun is at the right level to display all my dirty little kitchen secrets!

You should thank your lucky stars that it is not white.  Just saying.  White terrorizes you.

Re: Black smooth top stove question

@Oznell ...funny you say you would not purchase smooth top again...that is what I said BEFORE I purchased this stove...the sales person could not believe I would not go smooth top, I should have stuck to my guns.  I will look for the product you mentioned if the vinegar trick does not work.

I would much prefer to clean the 'pans' of the stove instead of this cook top.  Lesson learned....

What a pain because I use the stove 4-5 times a week.

Re: Black smooth top stove question

My mom had a white glass top stove.  What a pain to keep clean.  She used Weiman and always had good results.

One thing I didn't know was the cooktop had to be completely cooled before cleaning it.
