Bite Splint for TMJ

Has anyone here ever had a lower acrylic bite splint from your dentist? Was it hard to eat with it, and to wear it when you sleep? It is supposed to help my TMJ, but I read that you should only wear it for a few months, because it might cause you to have an open bite, which would cause more problems. Were all the adjustments included in the price? Thanks
