Much better to give cash or a gift card than to try to please the tastes of a teenager. They're usually following their own trends in fashion, music, jewelry, etc., and it's very hard for an older relative or friend to keep up with those or guess what the young person likes or wants. And a "miss" is awkward for everyone.
