I would absolutely not call Child Protective Services. It could be so much worse for the children to have them taken from their mother, separated from each other and placed in foster care. That is the reality of what could happen.

We are so nosey and moralistic in this country, we have no idea how the other half has to live. Would you be satisfied to see child services investigate the home situation and maybe have those children taken away from their Mother. Many kids have problems who are living in the best of conditions, yet strangers are not suggesting child services get involved. I think we need to check our biases concerning the poor.
We are told it takes a village then we are told to look the other way. The girl already has a psychological issue so just maybe someone should get her help. The mother has her closed up with her brother all day in a small room. That is not normal, not healthy, not right.

I would not call CPS. Like I said, I mind my own business and keep to myself.
I dont think she uses drugs or drinks either. She is just very restrictive with her children.

Calling child services is not the it takes a village way. You talk to the Mother, ask her if she needs help and find ways to help her meet the needs of her family. Involve the church and private organizations who have resources to help the poor.

They won't remove the children, only as a last resort. There are all sorts of government services available to assist with housing. She may qualify for Welfare benefits, subsidized housing, and food stamps if her income is insufficient.

My question is who is the landlord/landlady? Who rented one room to an adult with 2 teenage children? The person had to know who was going to be squeezed into one room so that beds cannot even fit in there.
There has to be some restrictions regarding tenants and the space needed for this family by law.
Do the tenants pay cash only? This sounds more like the owner is overlooking the legality of this setup.

There is the possibility, she may not be legal, we are hearing what is happening to families every day.

@Cakers3 Up thread the OP said the family's trailer had burned and the home owner, who knew her, offered the room probably thinking it temporary but it's been a year and a half and they are still there.

@occasionalrain Ok thank you. There still has to be some tenancy laws, though.
If found out, never mind CPS. The person who owns the house will face fines and the children could very well be reported anyway.
If the mother cannot find other suitable housing-this could end up a real nightmare.
I feel sorry for those teens and somewhat for the mother.

First of all, what a kind and caring person you are!! Recognizing the fact that a child you befriended is celebrating a birthday, her 16th no less, and deciding to give her a very sweet gift should be seen for exactly what it is. An innocent gesture of kindness. If you ask me this world needs more people like you in it! ❤️ As for the mom, she gives reason for serious concern. Aside from both children being cooped up in a single room each day for hours on end, I know of NO 14 year old, mildly autistic child who is “self homeschooled.” And putting that kind of responsibility on a young girl, who is also in need of an education, begs the answer to many psychological, physical, and legal questions. And for anyone who subscribes to the “mind your own business” mantra, I have 2 words for you: TURPIN FAMILY.
