My hopes that bird flu would decline were dampened by a news report on my local NBC station that the bird flu is continuing to linger. It is still a major threat to poultry and egg farms. Over 50 million chickens have been destroyed trying to slow its spread. It has crossed over into mink. The concern is other species will become infected as well and increase the spread.
Meanwhile, egg prices are continuing to be affected.

I paid less than $3 for a dozen eggs yesterday for the first time in weeks.
I also bought gas for a price that started with a 2 for the first time in a long time.

It won't ever just go away. It will have better containment, at times, but then have a resurgence. And, yes, we have to hope it doesn't hop to other species, bringing it even closer to us.
It's our new world. My NEW mantra is -- just take a day at a time, and try to worry less about things that may, or may not happen, that I have no control over, anyway. Okay, I admit, it's getting to be a struggle :-). Lots of self talk necessary.

The bird flu is likely to be with us for a very long time because it's in the wild birds, too, where it's unlikely they can be easily contained any time soon.
As for the prices of eggs. I had no idea that prior to the huge increases we've seen in the last few years, right up to 2020, we'd been paying just about the same thing for eggs as we did in the 1960's. Lots of the smaller egg farmers were already giving up because they couldn't afford to house and feed their flocks. The pandemic speeded up their demise.

Egg prices are finally dropping enough to really notice here in southern WV. Last week a dozen jumbo eggs were $3.49 at IGA; the price this week is down to $3.09.

Grocery stores usually have big sales on eggs right before Easter. Watch for them and stock up this year.
I've never tried this but I've read you can freeze fresh eggs by cracking each one into an ice cube tray, freezing them, then storing in a plastic bag.

Shoekitty said. Here in California I haven't seen gas that begin with a 2 since 2010, lol. But eggs I get for 4.99. They are organic free range vegetarian. They do sell reg eggs for 3.00 though

I mentioned to my sister that this year, hardly any birds have come by at my Bird Feeders with several Suet Cages! I wondered if it's the significantly warmer winter weather here so far? She suggests it's perhaps the Bird Flu. Now,that's scary. If that's true, maybe "Bird Flu" has even hit our wild birds too??
