Bidding On E-Bay?

I know very little about bidding on an item with E-Bay, so I have a question. If I place a maximum bid of say $40.00, will the amount show only $1.00 over the present bid, or will it show my bid of $40.00? Also if I do the "One Click Bidding", will it keep me ahead of the other bidder/bidders? I read the instructions on the E-Bay site, but still do not thoroughly understand it. Will you experienced bidders please help me with this? Thanks!
