@manny2  you can say that again!  She definitely was unhinged. Just totally obsessed big time. She almost had a narcasiist attitude.  I don't think she ever had remorse for the terror she reigned on her kids by involving them, or the death of her husband and new wife. Something happened with her .l. Snapped. Quite a story at the time. I felt bad she was struggling so hard with her emotions.  At times (to me ) she she seemed so wrapped up in revenge and hate, it was hard to sympathize with her. It is true, I am 78, and like many women here I have known women going through similar marital issues ( even some here on the forums) but murder never happened.

Re: Betty Broderick

[ Edited ]

was she ever diagnosed?  Her moods, and shopaholic spending and lavish style ran her broke. Wonder if she had BPD?  I know she was medicated and had therapy in prison. I think in the beginning she had high alimony, and was given a valuable home. But she had uncontrollable spending, and she hired lawyer after lawyer.  I think her ex avoided her, as did the wife and they tried at first. But then they had to get restraining  orders, she vandalized their home and  property. Even having  keys made and entering their home.  The younger kids were unhappy, and Betty unfortunately tried to get them involved, and was unrelenting about dissing father and Linda.  I think  one of the daughters talked about what happened, that her dad didn't do much of the stuff Betty claimed.  Bette took each of the kids, one by one, with all their belongings and left them at the from door of Dans house.  Hoping they coukdnt handle the job of taking care of kids.  Then the husband got custody.  Her kids, (except a grown child ) couldnt be around her. They felt bad, and loved her but I think she sucked the energy from the room.   I think she became unrelentingly obsessed and couldnt ket go, and things escalated from there. Just sad, sad, sad

I'm watching the Netflix story right now which goes into  a lot more detail Dirty John: Betty. Murder is wrong but she really got done dirty. Easy to see why she lost her mind. He gaslit her big time with his affair he lied about. It was difficult to get lawyers to represent her because he was a big shot lawyer in San Diego. He had a thriving law practice and he divorced her first without a settlement of their assets and she  had to

First, her parents were a bit narcissitic and raised her to be subserviant to men and she married at 19.  She had to quit her job as a teacher when she became pregnant. they had their first baby while she helped put him thru medical school first and then  law school after he became an MD. He didnt practice medicine, he just decided on Law school and she supported the family doing menial jobs. by then with 2 babies and while he kept getting her pregnant because he didnt want them to use contraception for religious reasons. She lost the third (full-term) and then they had 2 more kids in California

I believe the Dirty John Betty series is based on the book  Until The Twelfth of Never, based on the complex dynamics of the case.

RIP Betty.

Oh, the irony, right?  That he didn't want them to use contraception for religious reasons.....yet, cheating on your spouse & then taunting her is okay?   Woman Frustrated

@SloopJohnB @foxywoods   Betty did receive fair settlement, it's just not what she wanted. I found this on a legal page about divorce.  Also, online if you search an article in People by Betty's daughter, around 1989, she explains how horrible it all way.   Bettys daughter said, the movie... as well as media , that many things were wrong with what was said about her Dad.  There were two sides. Yes Dan had an affair, he did come clean and tell her, but it was down hill from there as we know. They both may have had a more tradition view of marriage, I know my starter husband did...tht was in the day. Most men are more enlightened today. We hope anyway. I don't think he gas lighted her.  He lied, and yes he was high powered attorney.  Yes, None of his friends or associates would take her case.  They were friends of Dan.  It was bad all the way around. Here is what Betty recoeved in divorce, and got before divorce. She murdered 2 people in their sleep. Wrong.  What did it get her? But, she wouldn't have listened.

Betty Broderick’s divorce settlement from Dan Broderick amounted to about $1. 5 million, but it wasn’t a simple cash payout. Instead, the settlement package included a $1 million lump sum, $400, 000 in alimony, and the family home. Following the divorce, Betty was awarded $16, 000 per month in alimony in addition to her salary from working at an art gallery. However, after deducting legal fees, she ended up with just over $28, 000. Dan was required to pay her $12, 500 per month based on a determination of his gross annual income of $1. 2 million. Despite the settlement, Betty’s situation highlighted issues regarding fairness in divorce, exacerbated by Dan’s affair. The divorce was finalized on January 30, 1989, with Dan paying a total of $30, 000 plus alimony. Although substantial for the time, the settlement did not meet Betty’s expectations; she had sought more than $250, 000 annually in alimony and child support. Betty’s financial entitlements remained contentious, leading to protracted legal disputes and a settlement of $16, 100 per month. The infamous aspect of their divorce was Betty’s later actions, which included her breaking into Dan’s home and fatally harming him, culminating in losing custody of her children and receiving less than she anticipated. Betty Broderick’s story remains a cautionary tale of difficult financial negotiations and personal turmoil during a divorce. Despite being awarded a sizable settlement, her experience illustrates the complexities and emotional strain involved in divorce proceedings. The tumultuous saga reflects broader societal issues regarding divorce equity and the distress that can arise when relationships falter, a narrative echoed by many others facing similar challenges in their divorces.

I thought everyone had heard about Betty Broderick.

@San Antonio Gal Woman LOL  I had heard the name, remembered she killed her husband, but couldn't have come up with details.  I remembered a couple of others, one who drove over her husband 3 times--that I remembered, but couldn't have put the names together with what they did.

Just to be clear, I really have no sympathy for any of the parties involved.  She is a killer times 2.  He and his new wife are cheaters among other things.  I just felt the hypocrisy of him being so "religious" about using contraception yet not so "religious" when it comes to cheating on his wife.

Clara Harris, the lady than ran over her husband 3 times and killed him was released from prison in 2018.  Her situation was more of a "crime of passion" when she flipped out after seeing them come out of the hotel.

Clara's husband was a low life cheater.  Clara and her husband were both prominent dentists who had a charmed life. She and her husband owned six dental offices in the Houston area.  Too bad she wasn't enough for the husband.  @Sooner .

(I read she can no longer practice dentistry due to her criminal record)
