Re: Being the Author of a Thread

When they become too cumbersome to navigate, I just pass them by also.

I also don't read posts containing dense text from other sources, but that's another story.

@goldensrbest Your post is another good example for the original poster. What "drives me up the wall, when people do that, I just cannot keep reading"?

Not picking on you, honestly...just showing how not quoting at least part of something that was said, may make it hard to understand what/who the post is referring to.

I honestly don't know which post you are referring to that "drives me up the wall." Heart

Thought that was clear, what the op was speaking of, long post of quoting  over and over.

Re: Being the Author of a Thread

If someone is seriously interested in the topic they will go back and read the original comment.  All this repetition in different fonts and colors is jarring.  You can't sort the wheat from the chaff.  Highlight the one sentence or paragraph you are commenting on, if you feel you must quote something.

Re: Being the Author of a Thread

IF it is really clear what I'm responding to, I don't quote. But in some threads, they get so intricate and if you don't quote the post(s), people don't understand what and who you are referring to, assume something else, and things get really messed up.

And using post numbers to respond  makes a bunch of jumping around tying to keep in mind who is saying what to whom.

The long chain of quoting can get tedious, but in some cases it is necessary in my opinion.

I must be missing something, when starting a topic, should the author partake in every single comment by copying the entire conversation?

Perhaps it is a way for the OP to acknowledge the post/reply, but a 'heart' does the same with far less clutter IMO.  I think maybe the replying to every post is a way to keep a conversation going on and on. JMO.

@qualitygal I think saying "in response to message #13" can change to #14, #15, etc., depending upon how many people after you respond and whether you have your settings to show the most recent response first or whether your settings are to show the original post first. Does that make sense how I explain that?

@World Traveler

            True, our settings can determine the order in which responses are listed so that would make the message numbers different.   Also, if any responses were removed, that would change the numbers of the comments that followed.

Whenever a poster refers to a specific post # to read, I go to what I think is that post #, it clearly isn't.....and I end up more confused than usual lol.
