Re: Been Watching Extreme Couponing and . .

I have a niece that coupons, but she watches dates, rotates her pantry, gives to family, etc.

Kmart here doubles coupons including $1, one week out of every month. She went a couple of weeks ago and got 2 shopping carts full and in the end, they paid her $4 and change.

When I see her now, I tease her. 'Whatcha been doin'? Robbing Kmart?"{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Most of it would go bad or go past it's expiration date before I could use it since I am now a one-person household. So the only reason I would have to buy that many ""extras"" would be to give them away.

Re: Been Watching Extreme Couponing and . .

I should have added that for me the dumbest thing I have seen is the show where the woman takes her ex-husband along to help with additional carts - strange??? She was the one who bought a dozen bottles of brown mustard and all the available lipsticks with no regard to the color. A comment was made by the woman during the show that she was going to use all the money she saved to buy boots and handbags. Really???? And what will she feed her family? Her shopping basket contained no protein, no vegetables, no milk or eggs, no health care products.

I no longer coupon but I do stock a deep pantry because I live rural. I bought 25lbs of LOL butter when it was $2.50/lb during the holidays. Stocked in my deep freeze.

If you can get say $300 worth of goods for under $50 it's a great return on investment if the items have a good shelf life and they are items you use.

Grocery prices are going to continue to climb. It's the price we're paying for the money we've printed. If you can get a jar of peanut butter for $1 today and can afford to buy more, do so according to shelf life.

It will be $2 the next time you need a jar.

Snowpuppy, I certainly don't mean to put words in your mouth, but I, too, live rural and stock a deep pantry. When others see someone like us that buy food low, and stock it, they immediately cry hoarder, without any understanding of the amount of food we use, or really look at the shelf life when food is stored properly (and often not in it's original containers, which when changing that by vacuum sealing can extend the life by years).

I, too, purchased and sealed and put in the freezer at least 20 pounds of butter as the sales brought it down to a lower price this season than we had seen here since the previous year. That butter, sealed and frozen will last for several years in the deep freeze, and if the price is lower, I can replace what is used, if not, I won't be buying. I did the same when peanut butter prices went wacky. When the news broke about what was going to happen with the price, I stocked a years supply, and could wait till the prices came down some before I had to restock (and they never did come back down to "pre crisis levels").

My citified brother and his wife think I'm a nut case when they see my basement shelves, but if you prepare three meals a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you go through a lot of food. I shop from my basement and freezers, not run to the store for something every time I want to prepare a meal. I rotate and organize the food so that it is used up before it goes bad, but some will never see the truth in having more than a couple days of food on hand.

As for the coupon thing, the stores here no longer double or triple coupons. Since the extreme couponing, most stores here have shut down the ability to buy things in the quantities that they show portrays. Most coupons readily available to us are for things we don't use. I would say that I probably don't save more than a couple of hundred dollars a year with coupons, if that. I'll use them if they are in the papers we get or available to download on to my various store cards, but not my main way of saving money.

I've seen quite a few episodes of the show. I saw quite a few that did this as a full time job. One lady gave away a lot of what she got to her grown children (seems she had quite a few), several people were keeping a certain number of the things they got, but moving most to organizations and pantries. A few had rather large families, with seven or more people living in the house. And a few were just putting hundreds of razors and cat treats in the basement and I guess if they are using their time and money, who am I to say it is any more crazy than those with 300 Dooney bags or closets full of expensive shoes, or Lori Greiner cabinets full of jewelry?

As another poster pointed out, much of the show is staged and exaggerated like all 'reality' tv is these days, and you have to take what you see with a grain of salt.

Re: Been Watching Extreme Couponing and . .

I agree with the OP; extreme couponing is an obsession I'm just not interested in. I don't use coupons much because they are usually for name-brand stuff that is still more expensive than the store brand, even with the coupon. Or I have to buy more than I need. A lot of times the coupons are just for junk food like pre-packaged meals or mixes. No, thanks. I'd rather spend a little more money and eat healthier.

Besides, I'd be really annoyed if I were in line behind someone who felt the need to purchase two carts full of pop tarts {#emotions_dlg.scared}

p.s. Extreme couponing is not the same as stocking a deep pantry. I understand that there are people who don't live close to grocery stores because I grew up that way.

I watch some of the shows. They make no since to me. How fresh can some of that stuff be? Also what about mold. And how do they keep mice and rats out? Just my view point.

Re: Been Watching Extreme Couponing and . .

My grocery store and the convenience store down the street keep Sunday papers behind the counters. People were stealing the coupons out of them.
