This was a very heroic but highly unwise act by this couple that could have easily ended tragically.  A better plan would have been to call state wildlife officials who are trained for this sort of situation.

Mama Bear had no way of knowing they weren't going to harm her kids.  Her inclination would have been to get defensive.

@Kachina624,

You are right, it could have turned tragic but I think with her babies crying the mother was desperate and seeing these humans coming and hearing the cries and worried,

she trusted they were there to help.

There are so many incredible stories about wild animals asking and hoping humans will help when it comes to their babies. Animals aren't stupid and can read the situation and understand too when someone is going to help, especially when they were not able to themselves.

Thankfully it did turn out for a wonderful outcome.

@On It

Thanks for sharing!

Oh, that is wonderful! Great to hear about a happy ending!!!

We get raccoons in our dumpster at work every once in a while.

We put a board in there so the raccoon can climb out on their own.

It is un-nerving enough with a raccoon - I can't even imagine doing it with a Momma bear right there LOL!!!

I'm so thankful for the people who rescued those cubs!  That would be such a scary situation to be in, but I can't imagine what might have happened had it not been for them.

You always find the best, most uplifting stories to post.  Thank you.❤️. I needed this today.

Re: Bear Cubs Rescued

In this area of southern WV, pictures of mama bears and cubs caught on security cameras rummaging in local dumpsters is a very common thing.

Many times they are in city limits in restaurant dumpsters, but they are also seen in dumpsters in our parks, schools, rest areas, and apartment complexes with a communal dumpster.  Most recently a mama and cub was spotted in a Sheetz parking lot at 4:30 a.m., checking the dumpster as well as the garbage cans at the gas pumps!

The dumpster covers are supposed to be kept closed; mama bears open them.  I personally would not risk my life to get that close to bear cubs, period.  I would contact a local DNR officer to take care of the issue.
