I disagree. I felt the opposite...a show of respect for the loss of their lives.
Yep. They turned their back on the man who threw them under the bus.
The vast majority DID NOT turn their backs on their mayor.

Think again.

The union had their 'feelings hurt' when the mayor acknowledged what, as parents, he and his wife told their son. It implied, actually said, that black males are treated differently than white males. While he is not black, his wife is. She knows. When black men/women in positions of power acknowledge that what the mayor said is true on the part of some officers, I tend to believe it. It's not an indictment against all officers. It is an indictment against some. The union needs to acknowledge that it happens and work towards not allowing it to happen. When their own black officers are fearful of their brothers when not in uniform that says something powerful.

I will agree with that kdgn. Most thinking people do and have acknowledged that. But a certain element of society took what he said as a license to carry on their hatred of cops. The mayor represents his constituency, of course. But he has a responsibility to be very cautious with his words too. If he is to be considered a boss to the police then he needs to support them NOT set them up for disdain. And by that...I mean the majority of police NOT the few bad apples.
ETA...yes the mayor not the governor. Sorry. I must admit that I question his comments to begin with. I believe they were for political reasons and nothing else.

Exactly how I feel. They showed their displeasure the way they could...for a Mayor that ran on an anti-police campaign and has continued his disrespect for them.

The mayor is the culprit here. These poor officers are spit at, sworn at, attacked with hatchets, belittled, and abused day in and day out, and even shot at and killed. Some of you seem to think the mayor and the criminals are the good guys. Sad. So many police officers really go out of their way to help people and get no credit. Respect these heroes! Who will you call when you are robbed, attacked, in an accident, or need help in any kind of emergency?

Until law enforcement is given the respect in those neighborhoods I don't blame them.
These people in these lower end neighborhoods need to start taking responsibility for their own. They want the police there but yell the police are too quick to act too a quick on the draw. Make your minds up for gods sake! Bad people who are doing harm should expect no less when they are confronted by the police.

But they also have to respect their bosses - both their chief and the elected leaders of NYC.
Respect is earned...not given. They are free citizens just like the rest of us which means they have a right to express their disrespect. It is open season on cops. They need support not politics.

And respect for the officers has to be earned too.
