My husband and  I have a picture of us  taken under that Banyan Tree as I am sure many other posters do as well.

Its canopy is 2/3 of an acre wide.  It is quite a tree.  From what I am reading, many people are hopeful after seeing it in person that it can recover.  I hope so.

It is an icon in Lahaina town.

@Kachina624   It was stupendous, have seen it many times. The devastation tears at your heart, this old whaling village with many 1800's wooden structures destoyed, incredibly hard to fathom.  So sorry for the loss of their livelihood and history.

This is all so heart-wrenching.  A symbol of strength, beauty, and natural majesty that can't be taken for granted.   In the midst of and a reminder of so many lives lost, individual souls who are mourned by their loved ones and who hold vastly, tenderly precious places in countless hearts of those who will have to learn to heal, to mend, and to carry forward the memories, the life stories, and the blessings of having known and loved those precious spirits.

A reminder to appreciate each person, each day, everything around us that enriches and makes our life what it is.  Continued prayers for healing and rebuilding.❤️

The death count is up to 93 and only 3% of the search is completed as of this morning (Sunday, 8/13).  It will get exponentially higher.  Even some of our newscasters are finding it hard to hold back tears as they report on the devastation.  This will be a years-long heartbreak.

@Krimpette

Yes, I've seen them in St. Pete, my daughter in law's hometown.

Update on Banyan Tree...

There was an arborist on the news this evening saying the roots are still alive and there are signs of regrowth already!
