By now, most everyone has seen the skeletal 150 year old Banyan tree on Maui which was burned, possibly destroyed, during the fire.  I immediately wondered what it looked like alive and healthy.  I just ran across this photo.  Magnificent tree.

Never heard of it before the fire coverage.  Hope it can be saved.

Banyan trees are mentioned in one of the songs from South Pacific, titled My Girl Back Home

I just learned recently that they're also found in parts of Florida.  Nothing like the magnitude of the treasured one in Maui, however.

The banyan tree planted in the 1920's at the historic  Thomas Edison winter estate in Ft. Myers, FL is considered one of the largest banyan trees in the continental United States.

I  saw this Banyon tree when I visted Maui.  It was so beautiful and impressive.  I hope it was not completely destroyed. So sad what has happened to that beautiful island and those who lived there.

Banyan trees have aerial roots, which start at an overhead branch and grow down and into the ground.  So, they appear to have many "trunks."  IIRC, the Maui banyan has about 45 "trunks."  The hope with the Maui tree is that the tree's roots have enough stored energy to bring the top of the tree back to life.
