I watched that presentation with interest, not in buying, but I think of Baklava as being Greek.  My best friend in high school's father was Greek.  I remember going with her and the family from MS up to VA in a VW Bug to visit other Greek family.  That's 6 people in a VW bug.

We made Baklava while we were thare, and it's different than any Baklava you'll probably find made commercially.  What's usually sold I call lazy Baklava. How I learned to make it, you did like 5 layers of the phyllo dough, brushing each layer with melted butter, then a thin layer of nuts. Repeat several times, then top with several layers of the phyllo in the end.  What I've always found commercially has just one thick layer of the ground nut mixture between several layers of the phyllo.  It's good, but it's not the same.

I had someone offer to pay me for my recipe one time.  I have my own secret ingredient much like the Dubai's rose water.  I guess it'll die with me since my daughter has no interest in cooking.  It's a real pain to make because you have to keep a slightly damp towel on top of the yet unused phyllo after you remove each sheet or it'll quickly dry and just crumble in your hands when you go back for another sheet.

@Icegoddess

You forgot to mention honey and dark brown sugar. That's always included when adding layers for Baklava. Those are usually added along with the crushed nuts layer IIRC. Now I'm tempted to make some baklava!

I so love bakava and have a really easy and delicious recipe by Ree Drummond that has always turned out great. Think I will make some for Xmas eve dinner!!! It's made with phyllo dough and is not nearly as fancy as in the photos here but oh so good.

I have seen Baklava every Holiday season at Wal-Mart as well in the Holiday treat section.  Price is about $12.

@rockygems123   Thank you for this information! I just ordered it from Costco as we've tried to find Baklava locally for a few years with no success. Thank you again!!! Smiley Happy

Well, they got me!  Guess that was why when I placed my order it came up a few minutes later as already in process.  Live & learn I suppose.  But if it's the same thing then boy someone's making a huge profit.  I buy very few food items on Q because of the high prices so I should have known------!
