It's been this way for a very long time - no shortage of idiot drivers. It's just gotten worse now that so many can't let go of their stupid phones for a hot second. It's scary how ego-centric so many are, more and more.
I almost think that those of us who play by the rules of the road are in the minority anymore.
I'm reminded of one (of many) episode probably about 20 years ago when I was driving along on a priority road. Some dufus in a van come up to the stop sign on a cross-street and barrels out, turning left, right in front of me. It was so close that I had to slam on my brakes immediately or there is no doubt there would have been a collision. I had the right of way but it didn't matter to this jerkwad.
As he's cutting me off I put up both hands like 'what the heck?' (or something like that) and what do I get in return? Maybe an apology? Nope! He flips ME off. I did nothing wrong but I'm the bad guy to somebody like this whose head is so far up his own butt that nothing else matters.
It just illustrates that 'it's all about me and nobody else matters' mentality of some people.

Reasons:
1) texting/talking on cell phone
2) people are using pharmaceuticals and street drugs
3) people are allowed to drive who don't have the ability to
reason correctly; they make bad life decisions and do not
appear to be trusted in a "quick decision" mode
4) parents turn teens lose with a car before the teen is
capable

....... and the people that fly through parking lots like they are on a highway? No yeild, no watch for pedestrians?!

Add to that the fluffy white dog sitting on the driver's lap and hanging out the window, the cell phone and the radio and it is a recipe for disaster.

@151949, you left out the cigarette, putting makeup on and eating or yet, reading a map!

I once (a long time ago) saw a guy eating a PLATE of food while he drove. He had the plate balanced on the top of the steering wheel and the dashboard. Looked like he was kind of manipulating the steering wheel with his elbows/forearms, while he used a fork AND knife to eat his food. Never saw anything like that before or since!
Once I saw a car that was one of the type that had a recessed dash. The person/s who owned the car had apparently been using that recessed dash area as an ashtray for a very long time (VERY!). Ok, then.

@chickenbutt, that's incredible & stupid!! Nothing surprises me anymore. Drive down I-75 in Atlanta and it's unbelievable.. or drive anywhere to see all the idiots doing everything but paying attention and driving!!! There was a guy in Knoxville had his cellphone propped on the engine of his Harley, texting yet!!

Just yesterday DH and I observed w/horror an elderly (and I'm no spring chick myself) driver turn into the wrong way of the highway and proceed to drive-hairraising!
Yes, my psychic powers arent as sharp as they had once been so I appreciate the lost art of usinga turn signal and watching the road-not my cell phone.
I observed 1 female driver weaving across 2 lanes on above mentioned highway. She was taking selfies.

IMO, it's been too late many, many times. At least 15 years ago a teenage girl was concentrating on her phone near our n'hood. She plowed into a mother and child and ran. The child hit did not survive. The mother did, sort of. Cell phones in General should be illegal when driving. They are in many other countries.

I agree.
The junior high near us has some type of detectors mounted at either end of the "school zone." It is supposed to detect cell phones of drivers in use.
