QVC forums have had stalkers.

Wasn't there an incident a number of years ago when someone stalked a poster using information here and elsewhere?

People who are determined can find out anything, you are not as anonymous as you think.    They can find out your IP address, they can cross reference you to other sites.   If you are posting here, you are all over Google.

I'm not fearful, just cautious.

I don't mean to be snarky, but I have a problem with  people always posting pictures of themselves, why?    I understand about realtors and other professionals but I'm talking about just the ordinary person.  I'm not that interested, personally.   Don't post your  picture for my benefit.

yes it happens and did more than once.

I would never post a picture or any other info that could identify me.  You never know who's trolling and using it for criminal actity.

maybe i'm being naiive here.

if i post a photo of myself here, and you don't know

1. what state i live in,

2. if the photo is recent or a old one.

how am i being put at risk?   can someone give me a clue as to the terrible things that i am at risk for?

It is very easy to capture your photo and then do a photo search on google. If your picture is anywhere on the internet then it will match and give the searcher the info they want. For example: You post a picture here. I copy it, do a search on google and if you or anyone has posted a pic on let's say facebood or instagram etc. I am privy to that picture and whatever information is attached to that picture and so on.

Re: Are you comfortable posting a picture of yourself?

For that very reason I do NOT post ANY photos on Facebook ... I'm probably the only person who doesn't take photos of vacations, selfies, my ready-to-eat entree sitting in front of me--no one really wants to see those things anyway!

No problem here on Forum ... as small as these avatars are, no one will recognize me ... but if you find me, I will serve you coffee if you come to my door, I would love to meet you.  By the way, my QVC security system will find you first. ;-}

Re: Are you comfortable posting a picture of yourself?

I would never post my actual photo here or on any other social media site. It just isn't something I want, my picture out there for strangers to connect to other private information about me.

I don't even have a facebook account that I would post anything personal in.

I hate when people post pictures of their minor children onlline. The kids have no say in it, and someday may wish their parents had never done it.

Re: Are you comfortable posting a picture of yourself?

Nope.  No way.  I've been here too long and know of things that have happened enough that it has deterred me.

I remember a poster getting harrassing phone calls when someone found her.  I want to think they even called her place of business.

I cringe at the baby photos that used to be posted here by the one poster and at the ones that the hosts post on social media.

Re: Are you comfortable posting a picture of yourself?

[ Edited ]

I've seen the damage that can be done, and also spent my life working in IT and following up on concerns about online privacy and security, so I've been passionate about this topic for years.

I hope everyone will at least take time to think carefully about this, even though it might seem at first glance to be something to dismiss or laugh about.
Not only do posters provide enough info to be identified, they also provide data often used as website login info and the answers to typical security questions or data that combined would lead us directly to someone's front door.

We see pet names; grandparents' and children's and spouse's and other family names/nicknames; first car make/model; schools attended; hometown; birthplace; complete date of birth; favorite author or actor; current city/state; prominent businesses or places of interest near our home; descriptions of the neighborhood; the list goes on and on.

I do believe everything ever asked as a security question on any website has been offered up here in what can look like data-mining survey question threads.
In addition, sometimes people repeatedly post their email address, their actual first or middle name, photos of themselves or their family, how to find their personal Facebook page.    An example of troublesome use of what seems to be innocent info:  there was an algorithm discovered several years ago which used a person's date of birth and the state they were born in and calculated their actual social security number.
Everything we post here, including images, is available on all the internet search engines.    It's all public.
For those who think no one would collect or use the data...  think of all the remarks we post about the time, creativity, and effort nefarious people devote to criminal or hurtful scams and hoaxes, robocalls and telemarketing schemes.   Those same people can use sites like this one, especially since it's populated with people who are active shoppers, interesting and lucrative targets.
We have no idea who is reading and posting here.   Anyone can use the info they glean here to harm us or to impersonate us.

The bottom line, and we need to keep repeating it:  we're talking about cumulative data.  All of the data pieces collected and combined to draw a picture.
Cumulative data on an anonymous poster transforms them into a person with a specific identity.
Several years ago I saw a comment in which someone said they actually keep a notebook on posters with all their personal information updated.   People on these forums have been stalked, located, contacted and harassed, and once it happens to you or someone you really care about it's no laughing matter.   Please, be careful and cautious.❤️

@mercyMe,  Just to be sure you're aware...  your avatar image isn't small when clicked/tapped by anyone reading here or when viewed in your online profile.

Qvc bb can be read world wide so it is not a little anonymous place. No, I will not be posting photo of myself. But I do think some who post and think they are all that is hysterical. SMH
