Or what do you do to get out and enjoy the wintry months?
Shoveling doesn't count![]()

My parents have a ski condo at Mammoth Mountain California but now that I am in Charleston I need to find a closer spot to ski. I love winter.

There's a ton of ski areas in Michigan, but the ones near me in the southwestern part of the state are really nothing more than big bumps. Once I started making ski trips to Colorado when I was younger, I had to really want to ski to visit the places near me.
Once the lakes freeze enough to support multiple people, I'll get my skates out. I've also recently tried snow shoes. Not sure if I'm going to do much of that.

I no longer ski but we did for many years, especially when the kids were growing up.
It was such a fun sport. It became quite expensive and a bit dangerous when the snowboarders arrived. Now we just enjoy a nice walk/hike on a winters day. We are lucky where we live there are many paths and trails to walk and there is nothing like a bright sunny blue sky winters day, that fresh air is peaceful and priceless.

I skied a handful of times in my life, many years ago, had fun...but also probably had enough of it. I tried cross-country skiing also, back in the day...a real challenge! I'd do that again, if the opportunity presented itself...but honestly...I'm not going out to buy all that equipment, that I have nowhere to store, for once or twice a year...so it would entail an Air B&B trip up north, where we might rent and do...lol...but that's not a plan right now.
I always loved skating, but haven't done that in years either. Used to go to Wollmon's rink in NYC. We have an indoor place near me...BF wouldn't be interested, so I'd have to find a friend who wants to do it with me...but outdoors is so much nicer.
So, what do I do...just walks. We have hiked in the woods in snow storms and after...they were some of our most beautiful hikes.
This year, so far...my winter sport...space heater, cozy chair, Netflix, a cup of tea and a cookie. 🤣

I live in Colorado. I think the most beautiful and best ski resort is Aspen for the runs. Next to that I would say Breckenridge. Vail has the best back-country trails.

Learned to ski on ice/ snow mix in the Northeast.
But, I became a better, smoother skier after trips to Colorado. Been to Aspen, Breckinridge and Snowmass. The last one was the start: l learned to relax and enjoy the wide open spaces there !
Great prep for Zermatt, Jungfrau and Austria !
Now that I am 76, I am too sensitive to cold....and want to keep the bones unbroken, lol !

Your mention of the SW MI ski "resorts" made me laugh. I grew up going to Alpine Valley and Mt Brighton (putting a Mt in their title is quite the stretch).

I haven't skied in decades but back in the day we would go up to Loon in NH and in Vermont Stowe and Killington to get away. We had a local mountain, too, so that would be our go-to place when not heading up to NH or VT.
In my early 40's DH and I started cross-country skiing. I actually preferred x-country because of the peace and feeling in touch with nature. You can stop anywhere and take it all in and very seldom came across other people, depending upon where you went.

Yeahhhh...the closest ones to me are Cannonsburg, Bittersweet, and Timber Ridge Stand in line for 30 minutes to ride the lift for 5 minutes and ski down in a minute or two. Not really worth the effort.
