@Icegoddess wrote:I'm not Kelly Clarkson or anything, but I do okay. I almost always find the right notes even when sight-reading, and I sing in a small group at church, so I must not be too bad. I'm better at group singing though. I only have one solo in my back pocket repetoire and I have to sing it a capella because the only music I had for it was for a soprano. So, I just have the keyboard player play me an F# and I'm good to go. I'm better at playing handbells though. I have done a couple of handbell solos and a couple of duets too. I also played handbells in a small group doing Tran Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve /Sarajevo. That was so much fun.
I love handbells!! There used to be a lady where I live who taught handbells. As she aged, she no longer taught and no one took her place. Really sad.

I was in the school and church choir growing up. I asked to be placed 2nd soprano when the school wanted me in 1st soprano. For certain pieces I could do the Alto portion if needed. Gave me a wider range for certain pieces. I had some solos and duets for school plays and Christmas events. Also did one wedding back in 1977 and sang the big wedding song of that time "We've Only Just Begun." I do not sing anymore except to my grandchildren.

@deepwaterdotter wrote:Another alto here. I used to pick up a few bucks singing at weddings on the weekends when I was younger. My mother was a professional 'girl singer' with big bands in her 20's. She sang with various groups in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Detroit. She had some interesting tales about singing in mob-owned 'joints' in the 1940's.
Funny you mentioned Chicago. Besides having the voice of an angel, she was also an RN and did private duty taking care of Al Capons brother when he got shot. She had some very interesting tales to tell also! In her younger days, she and one of her older sisters ran away to New York to sing and dance in the musicals there but my grandfather found out where they were and went and made them go back home!

Years ago, when I was 'younger', I used to sing along with the song 'Diamond's and Rust'.
Sounded pretty good............

My Ex said I couldn't sing. I think I do ok with music to read and an accompaniment and was in school Choir. I can carry a tune in Church.
Like the old joke.... What did you do with the money ? What money? The money your Mother gave you for singing lessons! Gets em every time... LOL.

I used to be able to sing. In grammar school I was often the lead in school plays. My favorite was "The Wizard of Oz" as Dorothy. In high school I continued singing. Loved my role as Maisie in "The Boyfriend."
I don't have the ability I had back then ..must have lost it and regret not sounding like I used to. I always think how wonderful it is that Tony Bennett still can sing as well as Barbra Streisand.

Those who have amazing vocal cords whose beautiful sound brings us to tears has to be a gift from god. It makes me very happy that some have this gift and share it. I don't mind not having great vocal cords. What I do have is great hearing and am grateful for that.

I enjoy singing--as I get older my range is smaller but it is still a joy. I have several pros in my family. Once we all sang "Happy Birthday" in harmony at a restaurant--we are a large group--and the dining room burst into applause, largely due to my sister-in-law, who can go an octave higher than any angel.
As I am in quarantine by myself, I mainly make up songs to sing to my cat. (Kind of like reading to a small child--I just insert her name in the song regularly. She loves it.)
