I have balance issues and can't ride a bicycle so I am considering a tricycle. Bikes today - at least good ones - are a pretty big investment so I want to be sure before I buy one. Some people say they are big & heavy to pedal but I see that they now come with a 3 speed which would help with that. I also don't know if I want to buy new or look for used. There is one person where we live that has one but rarely rides it. I asked him if he would buy it again and he said I don't know.I asked if he wanted to sell it and he said no. His is actually very large. They now make them in 24" that I think would be lighter & easier to manage. The ad says they are easier to get onto for people with back & hip issues , esp. ladies. I guess I need to go to the bike shop and try some out. DH would like me to go with him when he goes to ride his bike, and actually, I can go to a lot of my errands here on a bike as this is a very small town and everything is close.

Definitely try one out. Is there someplace where you could rent one for a day so that you could be sure you will use and enjoy it prior to purchasing?

I fell off of my bike about eight years ago and suffered a comminuted proximal humerus fracture which resulted in a shoulder replacement so no more two-wheelers for me.
Biking is one form of exercise that I actually enjoy. I screwed up my courage -- lol -- and bought a trike down where I am now in AZ.
There is a learning curve for steering, but it doesn't take long. Mine is made by Sun and has a comfy seat.
Go for it!

DH had one which he enjoyed tremendously . He rode his 2 wheeler until after he turned 90, but balance issues became a problem. I've ridden it from time to time and it's a bit different from a regular bike, and not as "agile", but enjoyable once you get used to it. I ride it a little more now that he's gone, and it is good exercise, no matter how many wheels there are! Lately I've seen a few younger folks riding them and enjoying a ride with friends at a more relaxed pace.

I own a tricycle. It has gears and both a foot brake and hand operated brakes. It is very easy to ride here on the Fl. flatland. It is not a good choice for an area with even little hills.

You can have gears added but it might limit you to one style of brakes.

I had two tricycles when I was a young kid ~ a regular size one and a
huge adult size one. The big one was a beautiful burgundy color. I
could use that big one, now.

I rode a two wheeler as a kid with no issues, while on vacation 6 or so years ago I fell backwards while trying to get on one and tore my hamstring badly..
Since then on vacation I rent and adult trike and I love it.

I would think that any decent bike shop would let you try it out before buying.

I crashed on my bike two summers ago, and would really like to trade it in on a trike. DH has hinted that he would be embarrassed to ride bikes together if I'm on a trike, so I may be riding alone but That's OK (:
