I was never in a singing group but I did play in a high school band/orchestra and the All City Orchestra and I never heard that term used.
We went more by the pointing of the conductor and what he told us each movement represented when he pointed at our "trumpet section". Now we did have many practices so it wasn't like he expected us to know his exact methods. Even conductors don't lead their groups the same. With our conductor in high school, a point to our trumpet section with a fast and strong downward movement meant "really put some air into those horns".
