Re: Anyone else uncomfortable with this term?

I first heard this word used in the early 1990's used by my children. They would say.... "That su.** buttermilk." Then they dropped the buttermilk from the sentence. At that point, it sounded too vulgar to me, so I asked them not to use that word. I don't like to use that word or hear it spoken by anyone, but it is becoming more mainstream and used more often. I guess people don't even think about anything when thy say it. It's just another word that now means stinks.

I remember when kids said ""that really blows."" I prefer ""that really suc^^ks."" There are times the situation really does.

Re: Anyone else uncomfortable with this term?

I'm only 51 and not a prude, but I find it crass when used other than among friends. (Even then, often.) It does not belong in the business setting, school or in public/customer service transactions such as for a grocery cashier to say "This weather s#cks, doesn't it?" to a patron.

And even in private I think it is not a word I would allow anyone under, say, 16 to use around me.

If we banned all words that had a connotation as described, we'd have to bar a lot of men's names. No more talking about Peter Jensen or Magic Johnson. No sad thoughts about the passing of Rod Taylor. No sharing recipes for baked chicken breasts.

Oh and on...

For some reason I keep thinking of the great George Carlin's classic standup routine on "words." We are just talking about words, people, alpha characters formed together to make a word. IMO, it's what one says to people and how one says it, not the words used.

I can say "oh F" because I dropped a pencil, and I can say "F you," which has an entirely different meaning.

That's where I got into the habit too . . . working with lawyers, accountants, etc. I always worked in professional offices, and they swear like truck drivers (although truck drivers probably swear less, LOL).

I spoke often with one of the software vendors who always used to say "oh poop!" For some reason I found that more icky.

The word doesn't bother me, and I have been known to use it. I also know when not to use it.

You know what's funny, I'm hearing kids in college using the terms "cat's meow" and "cat's pajamas".{#emotions_dlg.lol}

Re: Anyone else uncomfortable with this term?

No that one doesn't bother me because it means well this stinks!. What bothers me is the over use of the F word. My husband and I don't swear ever, unless we stub our toe (or something in that order). I was told as a young person people who swear during conversations, sound illiterate because they cant think of any other words other than swear words. I agree!
