Re: Anyone Work for a Business that Closes for a Week?

My company shuts down durng Christmas Week. It is not listed on the official holiday list. They usually send out a memo right before Thanksgiving announcing it and wishing everyone a good holiday.

I've been freelancing on and off with this company for the past few years and I became FT Jan 2015 so I'm finally getting paid. yay

I'm 55 and excluding schools and colleges, I never in my life heard of business in the US that closes for an entire week at Christmas.  The expense would be too much.  It's the equivalent of giving every employee a week's pay for doing nothing.   Not to mention the work.  What business can just shut down for a week?  If Christmas falls on Tuesday, we have Monday off.  If it's on Sunday, we have Monday off.  Saturday, we have Friday off.   So, many years, our company does give us an extra day off.  With the work flow, it isn't even possible for us to let more than a few people take use their vacation days for Christmas week.   Yes, I know it's not like that in other parts of the world.   So what?  We're Americans.

I work in academia & the place is closed for winter break the last five working days of the year, plus New Years Day.  The only people working are the safety/security staff & facilities may have to come in if it snows & they have to do snow removal.  This is a private university & that paid week off is a gift from the board of trustees to the benefited employees that became effective the winter of 2006.  This year will be my first year since then to not get paid for the week since I'm no longer a benefited employee & only get paid when I work.
