But you can go online and order DVD movies/ tv shows, and they mail, them directly to your house. They provide a return envelope, so mailing back is included in the monthly price. I think you can order three DVDs at a time. Once you return one, they will automatically send the next item on your list. So basically you can have up to three items out at any one given time. This DVD account option does offer newer movies and tv shows, which streaming version does not offer. On 5/26/2014 MaggieToo said:I'm about ten years behind regarding tech stuff, so forgive my stupid question.
Does a TV have to be connected to a computer or a telephone line to receive Netflix movies, etc?
No Maggie. All you need is an internet connection and means to stream the video (your Blu Ray player, your Ipad, or your computer.) You also need a Netflix Account which runs $7.99 a month.

Thanks, Lynnj, I'll check this out, too.

You're right Lynn. The streaming doesn't have the latest movies but it's cheaper than the DVD's and it's instantaneous. We had Blockbuster until it went to Direct TV only and there was always a lag time.
If someone doesn't mind the wait, DVDs are the way to go for newer movies,

I don't even have my DVD player hooked up to the tv anymore. So although the netflix DVD account may be nice, honestly, by the time I get a chance to see one of the newer movies I can either rent it from cable or just wait for it to be on HBO or one of the other movie channels, or netflix. I just use streaming netflix to watch things that are older that I have never seen before. So much there, I could never get bored, lol.On 5/26/2014 Lynnj said:On 5/26/2014 MomOf4 said:They have another kind of account, other than streaming version. Are you certain that only one person can stream from your account at a time? I only ask because I just have the basic $7.99 a month streaming account and one day, on another board, people were talking about how many can view from one account at a time.
Just for kicks (because I really never thought of it before) I went to my account on the website and saw that it includes TWO people streaming from the account at a time. BUT, it also offered, for very little more, accounts to have 4 or more viewing at a time. So, it w/b a lot cheaper to just have one streaming account and increase the number of people who can use it at the same time. It was like a dollar more for more viewers.
Oddly, others said that they could have more than two at a time but I don't really care because there are only two of us on my account anyway. Maybe some of them had been members for much longer than I, I figured. I'm good with just two at a time.

As to the original question - I really love Netflix and am good with just the $7.99 a month streaming account. You do have more choices with the DVD option, but I really don't need to deal with that.
Obviously, this does NOT replace cable. I've seen some folks buy a streaming device to use Netflix, or whatever, thinking that they can access all the cable channels without paying. That is not the case at all. But you will find many many old shows, previous seasons of existing shows, and movies so it's worthwhile for sure.
For those of us who are already members before they increase the price, we get two more years at $7.99 before they increase it on us. That's pretty nice! I like companies that treat their loyal customers with that kind of respect.
I have a Blu-ray player, on which I can stream. But I mostly use one of my Roku3 units. I highly recommend Roku3. It has a zillion different channels but I mostly just use Netflix or Amazon Prime. It seems to be a better app through the Roku3 than through my Tivos, so it's worth it to have them, for me anyway.
One favorite thing about the Roku3 for me is the earbud set that plugs into the Roku remote. Very cool! But you just have to remember to only plug them in when in use. I saw several people complaining in reviews about them eating batteries and it seems those people were just leaving them plugged in all the time. If you don't do that, batteries last a very long time in the remote. But the earbuds are just the perfect thing for people like me - with tinnitus - because I have trouble hearing when more than one thing is going on at a time. With earbuds (or headphones - I also have a set of wireless headphones but I cannot lay down in those) I can hear everything brilliantly.
