Any help for kitty with constipation?

My 9-year-old girl has constipation issues - strains and strains. The vet told me to give her Laxatone which seemed to help at first. Now I am trying the 100% pure pumpkin which is a struggle but she will take it (I put it in her mouth - she will not eat it in her food). I have 2 fountains up in the house with fresh water daily. Also she had a bout 3 years ago of losing weight, diarrhea and vomiting and the vet suspected IBD so she was put on a grain-free diet which she has been on for about 3 years now and doing great.. besides the constipation. The vet told me these high protein diets can cause constipation. Any other suggestions please? TIA
