I agree.  All that "removed" stuff seems so stiff and cumbersome.  But I do understand why it is necessary for the genealogists so they can track family lineage and trees!

I did, and found some of them sort of helpful.  I just was interested in what folks here on the forums had to contribute.  Thank you.

I've always called mine my third cousin. My mom's niece is my cousin Sara, her daughter Heather is my 2nd cousin, so her daughter Avery would be my 3rd cousin. Simple to me! Smiley Wink

I have a cousin.

That cousin has a child.

That child would be my first cousin once removed.

Now, let' say that my first cousin has a grandchild.

That grandchild would be my first cousin twice removed.

WOW!  Thanks Still Raining!  That was very helpful!

Why thank you.  My family actually worked more on age.  A lot older than you?  Aunt or uncle.  Your age or younger?  Cousin.

So I ended up with a "cousin" who was an uncle and whole bunches of cousins who were "aunts" or "uncles".
