How do I know if my stylist rents a chair?  The topic has never come up or been discussed with her.  Naturally I tip.

Many years ago I briefly used a hair stylist who worked out of her home.  I don't remember if I tipped or not.

For years, my hairdresser had her own salon as an adjunct to her house.  I always justiried my tipping by feeling I was tipping her for her doing my hair, not because of the location.  (Just the way I chose to view things.). (Plus, she alsays did a fabulous job and I was wirh her for many years until I moved to another state.

I feel like the method of salon operations has changed drastically and now most stylists rent space.  The old rule of not tipping the owner is passe and no longer applies.

My stylist and her husband own the salon, he is the receptionist, and believe me, she expects a tip!

Yes, I absolutely tip. My stylist rents a chair in a salon. Technically it's her own business since she's a separate entity. I tip well as she gives me great service.

I can't imagine not tipping a stylist who rents their chair.  As previously stated, the rent is high n they buy all their own products, dryer, brushes, etc.  

This is a completely different case than a salon owner.  They have their own clients but also take a cut from the other stylists who work for them and rent from them.  I have never gone to a salon owner but I would tip if I did.  

@SamBrown sounds like you could maybe learn how to cut your granddaughter's hair and your own if it's just long and straight.  Assuming you're both just getting a trim there are tons of YouTube tutorials on how to do it.

My feeling has always been if you want good service, tip well regardless if salon Owner is the Stylist. If you are cheap about tipping for good service, you won't get their best service. That being said, if you tip well and don't get good service, then tip according to the service you receive.

This of course only applies to good service. Most of the time for good service I give 20% and on rare occasions for excellent service, 30% But if the service is bare minimum, or sub par, then that's what they get too. It works both ways IMO.

  How abt tipping the loyal customer who  for years  provide business  & pay the hair dresser whatever amount they request.

 My hair stylist  who works from her home gets $220 from me for allover color & cut & toner . How does that comapre to others ?

How abt tipping nurses who provide life saving care ?

Followed my stylist through 5 salons & now she rents a room in Sola Salons running her own business, she's worked hard & I admire her....I happily tip, over the years she's become a friend.

@Tori3569  I would never cut my own hair or anyone's hair for that matter.  I asked this question just to hear what everyone thinks.  I am in my late 50's and a lot has changed in the hairstyling business - including prices before "tips".
