Re: Another Scam Call Today Beware !

I investigated fraud for 20 years and would never open an email or text from someone or a company I didn't know.

I never click on links. I'll go directly to the site instead. Even if the sender is one I know, I have seen too much fraud to click on the links.

I always check my spam folder.

  • I open only the ones I'm sure are from people I know or companies I have done business with before.
  • I never open emails from people or businesses I don't know.
  • There are messages that look real but aren't. If unsure, I click on block because the real sender is then identified. If it's one I want, I don't confirm the block.
  • There are often emails in the spam folder that are valid.

One option is to turn on the automatic preview so you can see the start of the message without opening it. The language, misspellings, tone, graphics, etc can help you identify a scam before it's opened.

In fact,I tell those that say they will call us at home(docs, banks, etc) that if we are called at home and we do not recognize the caller ID ,we just don't answer.

Re: Another Scam Call Today Beware !

@Carmie

Are they still calling AFTER you blocked the number ?

Last August-October, we were getting 800 # calls originating from South Carolina....all from an alleged real estate firm.  We know no one from there and have no real estate there.  After getting almost 20+ calls a day, I spoke with Verizon and they walked me through "Nomorobo" app and how to use it.  I went through every call noted on that landline # and city-by-city identified, blocked the calls.  It took about a week of checking and blocking but it ended the deluge.  There was no cost involved to us.

When it started in August, I checked the Do Not Call Registry and all our numbers were still active....proves that that " service " doesn't work !

If you have a different service provider, contact them to see what options you have.  You may be able to suspend landline service for a period of time with a one-time charge to reinstall it.

Those calls can get the blood pressure to rise better than a visit to the doctor'
s office !!!

Good Luck !

Nomorobo and Hiya do a great job of identifying and blocking spammy phone calls for me.
I also set my iPhone to silence unknown callers.
Unknowns still can leave a voice message, but I don't listen... I read the visual voicemail transcript (perfectly safe to do).

So, I'm not bothered by those (no ringing) but when I see them listed I look up the number online to see if it's been reported and if appropriate I block and report them to Nomorobo and Hiya so they can investigate and add them to their data bank.

Re: Another Scam Call Today Beware !

I just put my phone on "Silence unknown callers". That stops my phone from ringing with scam calls.

If someone needs to talk with me, they can still leave a message. Most don't since they are scammers.

I get that Spectrum voice mail all the time on my cell phone.

Thing is we aren't even in an area that Spectrum services.

For the past three days, I have received several calls daily  from an 800 number that I don't answer.

They leave a message in Spanish for me to call back and press #2. The voice mail is sent to my email.

Weird.  Though I am able to read a little Spanish, I am not  fluent.  Not by a long shot.

I am blocking the number.  They are now bothering me.

@Carmie for the whole month of March we were getting calls on the house phone from Asbury Park, NJ.  After about 2 1/2 weeks of it, curiosity got the better of me and I just had to answer it.  She knew my first name and was wanting to know if I received the card in the mail for healthy food. I could barely understand her and hung up.

Re: Another Scam Call Today Beware !

I delete and block all the calls I don't recognize on my phone--now if they leave a voice mail, then I listen and usually it is an ok call. Been getting a few spams on my computer inbox  too--just a first and last name then pdf to click onto--I never do and I also delete and block them. . Been getting some that says they are from a one of the big virus protectors, not the one I use,  and that the $300+ has been taken from my acct for  continued coverage----I always check my accts first but then I send and report them as spam.  I do check my personal accounts and then change passwords too-just in case!!

Re: Another Scam Call Today Beware !

I have found peace by setting my cell to only let calls from my contacts thru.  If others wish, they can leave a voicemail.

When I wish, I can flip it to letting everyone in.  Did that yesterday for a repair who I knew would call on his cell from the gate.

Ok......    But if my phone said scam alert,  I certainly would not have called the number.  I don't understand that.
